FOUR & MORE: Best Inland Area Soccer Trios
1. Alex Turkson, Miguel Hernandez and Daniel Roman (Moreno Valley Valley View) — Turkson, the Eagles’ Ghanaian-born forward, is probably the most gifted player in the Inland Area. Tall and lanky with a blistering step-over, he’s made goals for himself time and again this season. Hernandez, a lightning-quick forward, has an inconsistent touch but utilizes his speed to make runs others cannot. Roman is small-ish midfielder but possesses well, can score from distance, and passes with aplomb. Together, they’ve combined for 21 goals and 16 assists though 17 matches, or more than 65-percent of Valley View’s offense in 2009-’10.
2. Chris Sanders, Dale Howard and Kyle Haeker (Murrieta Valley) — This grouping really should be more dominant than it has been. That’s curious, considering they’ve combined for 27 goals and 20 assists this season. Sanders, the Nighthawks’ proto-typical center forward, is among Inland Area leaders with 13 goals. Howard and Haeker have been productive as well, but Murrieta Valley has struggled recently nonetheless.
3. Hugo Lepe, Daniel Kim and Denes Kantor (Claremont) — Combining for 19 goals and seven assists in 17 matches, this trio has the Wolfpack hunting for a No. 1 overall CIF-Southern Section playoff seed, not to mention another Sierra League title. Also, Claremont remains one of only two teams in the Inland Area without a loss. Lepe, a senior, and Kim, a junior, have combined dangerously in midfield and produced moments of magic this season. Kantor, a junior, has settled into a striker-esque role.
4. Garrett Lomanto, Carl Fitzgerald and Josue Soto (Riverside King) — Playing within the confines of coach Todd Mapes’ 3-3-4 has made goal scorers out of a number of halfbacks. Lomanto has tallied the Wolves’ share, netting eight times to lead the team. Soto’s six goals are second, and Fitzgerald gets the nod over a number of others midfielders (Justyn Peeples, Ricardo Mendez, Gio Acosta) based on his sheer physical presence. He’s the biggest player Mapes features in a forward position.
AND MORE: Oscar Gonzalez, Ricky Ruiz, Edgar Acuna (Lake Elsinore Lakeside) — Gonzalez, just a sophomore, has scored a team-high 11 goals for Lancers coach Colin Gilliland, who must be thrilled at the prospect of two MORE seasons with Gonzalez barring a professional contract offer. Ruiz has added seven more goals, and Acuna has four for Lakeside, the last team undefeated team in Riverside County.
