Prep Preview: Riverside Christian at CSDR

I’m covering the Riverside Christian-California School for the Deaf, Riverside varsity football game tonight for The Press-Enterprise. The best part of this assignment is that it’ll be my first time writing about these two programs, which is odd considering I’ve lived in Riverside (and continue to do so) for each and every one of my prep football assignments. It’ll also be the first time these teams have played since at least before 2004, the oldest season in’s archive.

The Cougars (3-4 overall, 2-0 Arrowhead) have bounced back from a four-game losing streak to open league play undefeated. Senior QB Adam Ayres is the catalyst behind a beefy offensive line, having completed 35 of 67 pass attempts for 384 yards and five TDs, while also rushing for 532 yards (7.71 ypc) and five TDs. Senior RB Jacob Hernandez has played a large role, both running the catching the football, and has six total TDs.

It’s been a roller-coaster of a season for the Cubs (3-3 overall, 1-1 Arrowhead), who are coming off a 60-0 loss to CSD-Fremont, and are two weeks removed from a 54-8 victory over Riverside Sherman Indian. Joshua Macedo has only completed nine passes but five of those have resulted in touchdowns, a 55-percent touchdown-to-complete rate. Angel Aragon has caught three of those TDs, accounting for half of his total receptions this season, and Angel Cloud and Kelvin Nhan have combined to rush for three TDs and more than 250 yards.

Riverside Christian
 — QB: Adam Ayres, Sr. (6-foot-4, 210 pounds); RB: Jacob Hernandez, Sr. (5-8, 150); WR: Spencer Angel, Sr. (6-5, 190); Darien Millsaps, Sr. (5-10, 160); Raymond Godoy, Soph. (6-foot, 150); Thomas Howard, Fr. (5-11, 160); TE: Aaron Salazar, Sr. (5-11, 205); OL/DL: Robbie Briggs, Sr. (6-5, 190); Josh Barrios, Sr. (6-1, 305); Austin Whitaker, Sr. (5-11, 250); LB: Jonathan Mooney, Sr. (6-foot, 250); DB: Cody Wilcox, Sr. (5-8, 145); Cristian Castro, Sr. (6-1, 160).

CSDR — (Heights and weights not available) QB: Joshua Macedo, Jr.; RB: Angel Cloud, Sr.; Kelvin Nhan, Jr.; WR: Angel Aragon, Jr.; OL/DL: Clemente Telez, Sr.; Mark Garcia, Sr.; LB: Leonardo Torres, Sr.; DB: Alberto Douglas, Jr.; Jules Lange, Jr.

These teams are very similar in that they both run the ball, and they do it primarily with their quarterbacks. The Cubs are undefeated (3-0) at home this season but the edge goes to the Cougars, and their stout front line. Riverside Christian’s Briggs and Barrios should open plenty of holes for Ayres to run through tonight.
PREDICTION: Riverside Christian 42, CSDR 12
