Take a closer look at M.L. King junior Cruz Cuba and you’ll see a young man just getting started.
In only his fourth game at running back, Cuba displayed his durability and explosiveness as the Wolves (3-1 overall, 0-0 Big West Lower) ran up the score on cross-town rival Riverside Poly on Friday, Sept. 11.
The 5-foot-7, 170-pound running back had 15 carries for 130 yards and four touchdowns – all career-highs – in the win. Cuba played linebacker at the junior varsity level the last two years.
The Wolves have been a playoff team each of the last four seasons under coach Jason McMains and have posted 3-1 records to start each of the last two years.
We caught up with Cuba after M.L. King’s 37-6 win over Poly.
InlandFieldhouse.com: The offensive line was opening holes for you tonight. What do you think of the job they were doing?
Cruz Cuba: “The holes were opening up right away as soon as the second half started. And thanks to Weslee Sorenson, my fullback. He led the way for me.”
IF: What’s the key to maintain visual discipline on a night like tonight when there are so many distractions?
CC: “Just play my game, be stress free and have fun.”
IF: It’s a big night to be stress free. How do you manage that?
CC: “Just gotta stay calm and listen to the music.”
IF: Is this your biggest game ever?
CC: “Yeah. I recently switched positions, too. I was an outside linebacker but I saw a need and went to coach and asked to get the ball.”
IF: What does a performance like this mean to you?
CC: “It means a lot. It’s all the work and all the training and I want to thank my family for always being there and always pushing me.”
