RCC Holiday Tourney Starts Today

The longest running and most prestigious junior college men’s basketball tournament in California begins today, Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, with four games at Riverside City College’s historic Wheelock Gymnasium in Riverside (Ca.).

The Wells Fargo Holiday Tournament, now in its 40th season, is a 16-team tournament that annually features many of the state’s top teams, including former state champions Fullerton and Saddleback Colleges.

For the first time in its’ 40 years, though, the tournament will be hosted by the current state champion. The Tigers, under the stewardship of coach John Smith, won the CCCAA championship last season by defeating Saddleback in the title game. It is Smith’s first career championship and the college’s first state title since 1966.

Riverside is led by sophomore guard Daniel Redmon and sophomore forward Kevin Bradshaw. The team plays its first home game tonight at 7 p.m. against East Los Angeles.
