Centennial’s Season Still Not Good Enough
The state record for yards. A 14-0 record. And yet, Corona Centennial is not playing in the CIF-State Open Division Championship game? It’s time some one cried foul.
The Press-Enterprise’s news story here is as inflammatory as dry toast. But there should be sentiment, somewhere other than Corona, for the Huskies to be playing Concord De La Salle in the biggest football game of the 2010 season.
Have bowl organizers not seen this team play? The newly crowned CIF-Southern Section Inland Division champion is crushing teams, and De La Salle would be next.
Instead, capable-but-not-spectacular Anaheim Servite got the invitation to play De La Salle. Servite, also 14-0, is the new PAC-5 Division champion. They beat Mission Viejo, so they’re OK.
There really isn’t much sense in arguing which team is better. Centennial averaged 60-plus points per game, all victories by an average margin of 40 points. It’s the stuff of legend, but it’s being overlooked because the Huskies play in Corona and not Orange County.
If this team was Santa Margarita Centennial or Huntington Beach Centennial it would be playing De La Salle. But no, Corona is out past the hills, where dirt rules and everyone drools. It’s a class in classism. And it’s disgusting.
CIF bowl organizers should be more accountable for these decisions. They’re left unchecked, though, and Centennial has been swept aside in favor of a more prolific Orange County program. The Huskies will instead play Palo Alto at 7 p.m. Friday at the Home Depot Center in Carson (Ca.).
That’s a huge drop off from a potential third matchup against De La Salle. The two teams have played twice before in a state bowl game in the last five years, with each team winning once. It would be a conclusion to a best-of-3 series and it would be epic, with potential to be the game of the decade.
Oh well. Centennial is going to absolutely overwhelm Palo Alto (yawn), and the score will be 68-24.
Wow. How can regular folks wait? Are tickets still available?
haahahahahahahahahahah I love it….its hard not to be bias becaue I am a Centennial fan/parent but its great when someone eles sees and says the same thing I was thinking. Thank you for putting it out there and hopfully putting someone on notice.
I,m in a tight spot here, I live in the IE, have two boys in HS but am an alumni of Servite HS in OC. Now I more than anyone love to see any OC team lose to an IE school, Santiago’s waterpolo win over Mater Dei made my day!
But in this situation it is no different than college, it boils down to strength of schedule. Centennial flat out has a dynasty when it comes to IE football these days and I hope they smoke Palo Alto.
Love this site by the way, especially the soccer coverage.
