Inland Area Prep Football Top 10
1. Corona Centennial — The Huskies won the CIF-Southern Section Inland Division title last season and fell just short of a state title, losing to Palo Alto, 15-13, in the CIF-State Division 1 championship game. Senior RB Romello Goodman (5-foot-7, 165 pounds), who ran for the team’s only TD in the loss, returns to pace coach Matt Logan’s typically potent offense.
FINAL 2010 RANK: No. 1 (14-1).
2011 WEEK ONE: Sept. 9 at Ventura St. Bonaventure.
2. Norco — The Cougars were an Inland Division quarterfinalist last season, no doubt an under-achievement considering coach Todd Gerhart sent his starting running back and top offensive lineman to PAC-12 schools. Sophomore QB Coltin Gerhart (6-1, 215) returns a year wiser, and senior OLB Scott Starr (6-4, 235) will lead the defense.
FINAL 2010 RANK: No. 9 (9-3).
2011 WEEK ONE: Sept. 8 vs. Los Angeles Crenshaw
3. Temecula Chaparral — Tommy Leach who? Led by the strong and accurate arm of senior QB Matt Morin (6-3, 220), the Pumas are ready to forget about their tumultuous 2010 season. New coach Ryan Tukua, formerly the team’s defensive coordinator, will lean heavily on senior DE Teddy Queen (6-2, 235) and senior ILB Joe Robinson (6-2, 240) to make stops.
FINAL 2010 RANK: Not Ranked (4-7).
2011 WEEK ZERO: Sept. 2 vs. San Bernardino Cajon.
4. Vista Murrieta — The Inland Division runner-up (again) last season, coach Coley Candaele’s team is not likely to a reach third consecutive title game in ’11. This team does have strength and speed, though, especially on the defensive side. Senior DE Jeremy Castro (6-1, 240) and junior DB Su’a Cravens (6-1, 205) are among the Southwestern League’s best at their positions.
FINAL 2010 RANK: No. 2 (13-1).
2011 WEEK ONE: Sept. 9 vs. Rancho Cucamonga Etiwanda at Ontario Colony HS.
5. Colton — The Central Division champions last season, the Yellowjackets went through a bizarre coach search during the off-season before deciding upon re-hiring recently deposed Rick Bray. Continuity may be a key for this team, which returns scads of offensive skill players.
FINAL 2010 RANK: No. 3 (12-3).
2011 WEEK ZERO: Sept. 2 vs. San Diego Torrey Pines.
6. Fontana Summit — The Eastern Division runner-up last season, coach Tony Barile’s team should be experienced enough to make up for the explosiveness it lost with the graduation of stars Devon Blackmon and Montigo Alford. Senior WR/DB Donte Deayon (5-9, 160) will be looked to for big plays in their absence.
FINAL 2010 RANK: No. 10 (10-3-1).
2011 WEEK ZERO: Sept. 2 at Rancho Cucamonga Etiwanda.
7. Moreno Valley Rancho Verde — The Mustangs scored fewer than 40 points just four times last season, and outscored opponents by a combined total of 477 points last season. They may not match those totals this year but don’t bet against it either; Coach Pete Duffy’s team has claimed at least a share of a league title five years running.
FINAL 2010 RANK: No. 4 (13-1).
2011 WEEK ZERO: Sept. 2 at Hemet West Valley.
8. Elsinore — The reigning Eastern Division champs are led by the scrappy father-son duo of coach Tony Peralta and senior TE/LB Nolan Peralta (6-3, 225). No one expected them to win it all last year, and they have the rarest of opportunities — a chance to back-to-back titles. Can the Tigers buck conventional thinking once again?
FINAL 2010 RANK: No. 5 (12-2).
2011 WEEK ZERO: Sept. 2 at Chula Vista Otay Ranch.
9. Rancho Cucamonga — The Cougars were an Inland Division semifinalist last season, giving Vista Murrieta all it could handle before losing in two overtimes. Coach Nick Baiz will rely on senior QB Dimitri Morales (6-1, 195) to be as good or better than he was in ’10 when he completed 62 percent of his passes for 22 TDs and more than 1,800 yards.
FINAL 2010 RANK: No. 6 (11-2).
2011 WEEK ZERO: Sept. 1 vs. Victorville Silverado.
10. Corona Santiago — Admittedly, expectations for the Sharks may be over-inflated, perhaps in much the same way as they are for their most notable player. Junior QB Michael Darr (5-9, 165), the son of deceased former major leaguer Mike Darr, is certainly an athlete. The question is… is he also a leader?
FINAL 2010 RANK: Not Ranked (4-6).
2011 WEEK ZERO: Sept. 2 vs. Dana Point Dana Hills.
JUST MISSED: Chino Hills, Eastvale Roosevelt, Fontana Kaiser, San Bernardino Cajon.
