Prep Preview: Tilson Classic Quarterfinals

Upsets have been the story of the 22nd annual Tom Tilson Holiday Classic.

The hosts, No. 8 Riverside Poly, lost to Perris and Jurupa Valley on Saturday, deflating what was their over-inflated national reputation. Meanwhile, the secondary hosts, No. 5 Riverside King, lost to Colton in its early game and is also having to play for pride coming out of the consolation bracket.

No. 6 Lake Elsinore Lakeside suffered two defeats. First, their starting GK, Jose Chavez, suffered a broken nose in a victory over Rialto Eisenhower. Second, the Lancers were pummeled in the fist half of their next game, against Corona, and went on to lose 4-2.

And then there’s No. 9 Riverside Arlington. The Lions scored their first goals since the Rancho Cucamonga Tournament (in a 2-2 draw with Corona Santiago) but were dessimated by Temecula Chaparral, 5-0, in their second game. They, like Poly, King and Lakeside, will play out the tournament from within the confines of the consolation bracket.

So, the tournament in down to eight teams — none of which are ranked in this week’s Inland Area Prep Soccer Top 10.

TODAY’S GAMES:
(All at 8 a.m.)
At Riverside Poly

Field A — Jurupa Valley vs. Riverside La Sierra
Field B — Yucaipa vs. Riverside Norte Vista
At Riverside King
Field A — Colton vs. Corona
Field B — Temecula Chaparral vs. San Bernardino Cajon

Winners of these games play at 11:45 a.m. at the respective sites. The championship game is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Riverside Poly HS.

In the Poly bracket, wins by La Sierra and Norte Vista would set up an all-Alvord School District semifinal, and add a new chapter to the rivalry between the two schools.

In the King bracket, the Chaparral-Cajon game is easily the best of the round. And assuming Corona defeats Colton, the semifinal here may be the one to watch.

It all goes down today, with first whistle set for 8 a.m.

ALERT: Rain is forecast for Monday. Schedule subject to change.
