Prep Impressions: Jan. 7, 2012

I covered the 2012 Riverside County Wrestling Championships for The Press-Enterprise on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012, and came away thinking there are way too many tiny little details at a meet this size to ever get everything right, and still write a compelling article.

First, my mistake(s): I wrote that this was Corona Centennial’s third consecutive team title Riverside County Wrestling Championships. It’s actually the Huskies’ fifth consecutive county title. Also, I wrote that Centennial’s Andrew Schulte was the reigning CIF-Southern Section Master’s champion at 138 pounds. Actually, he’s the reigning 132-pound champion.

How did I get these details wrong? Not sure. But I did.

What’s interesting/confounding is that this isn’t the first time I’ve incorrectly reported details re: Centennial wrestling. I once wrote that former Husky Denzel Hawkins won a CIF-Southern Section Individual championship by decision, whereas he actually pinned his opponent. I still feel bad about about that one, but I apologized to both the wrestler and the coach and both are gracious humans.

Beaumont's Mike Cade (top) wrestles Chaparral's Matt McCullough on Saturday for 5th place at 285 pounds at the Riverside County Championships at Arlington HS.

That experience has, in part, shaped my point-of-view on the matter. Seems that if you’re in the business of stating facts, you’re going to get some wrong from time to time. At a certain point it’s just a numbers game.

In response, all you can do is the best you can. Oh, and make absolutely certain everyone’s name is correctly spelled. Then hope no one takes themselves so seriously that a few scant, albeit incorrect, details ruin their day (and yours).

Coincindently, I’ve seen Centennial’s wrestling team (coaches included) wear shirts that have a sort of winner’s mantra. One of the tenets of the mantra is “Always give 100 percent.” Another is “No excuses.”

I think those tenets apply here. I gave my 100-percent. I had a lede and I stuck with it, and had a story written less than 30 minutes after walking out the door. Any sports desk in the country can appreciate that. NO EXCUSES. I made the mistakes. I accept them and move on, as any rational writer would.

And hey, at least I got all the match results correct this time.

Centennial, by the way, is a-w-e-s-o-m-e. As I wrote (correctly) in the link above, the Huskies placed seven wrestlers in the first seven finals. That’s right. There was a Centennial wrestler in the 103, 113, 120, 126, 132, 145 and 152-pound finals. And Huskies won five of those matches.

Corona Centennial coach Randy Campbell:
“Unity, unity, it’s all about our team. They support each other all day long. They don’t sit up there and eat, and chew crackers. We’re down here supporting each other and that’s what it’s all about. We preach that from Day 1 when they walk in the door. It’s about us, not you, not you, not me. It’s about us. And that’s what they do. They’re all down here supporting each other.”

Riverside Norte Vista coach Ernie Ledesma:
“It’s (seeing Corona Centennial’s success) definitely a motivator. Definitely want to go ahead and start a feeder program. I think Randy (Campbell) has a good feeder program there. He gets a lot of kids that have been wrestling for a while. I think at that level, that’s what it takes to get seven guys in the finals. It’s something where you have a good program but you also have kids that’ve been growing up, being made to wrestle. So by the time they get to the program it goes with Randy, and it feeds into Randy, and it’s just a lot easier for the whole program. I know other teams have feeder programs, it just depends upon how established their program is.”
