Inland Area Prep Baseball Top 10

1. Riverside North (2-0) — The Huskies have opened defense of their CIF-Southern Section Division I championship outscoring opponents 22-5 thus far. Senior INF Gabrial Franca (5-foot-9, 160 pounds) had three hits — including an RBI double — in the victory over Colony on Saturday.

2. Redlands (2-0) — The Terriers have been rude hosts, especially senior Brian Ruhm. The 6-foot-2, 170-pound INF/OF went 5 for 5 with two home runs, one triple and an incredible 10 RBI in an 18-0 victory over MoVal Rancho Verde in Game 1 of the Redlands Tournament last Friday.

3. Yucaipa (1-0) — The Thunderbirds’ seniors were quick to contribute in 2012, with P/INF Tyler Sapp (6-foot, 185 pounds) striking out seven in five innings, 1B Dallin Padgett (6-foot, 190) hitting an RBI double, and SS Greg Espinoza (5-8, 160) getting two hits and scoring twice in beating Charter Oak in pool play at the San Gabriel Valley/Inland Empire Tournament.

4. Redlands East Valley (2-0) — The Wildcats look good through two games. How good? Howabout 12-0 bombing of Arroyo Valley in the season opener. Not enough? The whatabout a one-run victory over No. 8 King in Game 2? Senior P Kevin Stevens struck out 10 of the 19 batters he faced against AV last Friday, then had a two-run double to key a four-run fifth in the win over King last Saturday.

5. Vista Murrieta (1-1) — The Broncos began the season with a victory, but all indications point to coach Kurt Ruth’s team having been no-hit in the second game of a non-league double-header vs. Palm Desert last Saturday. VM batters were struck out 11 times in the game, with senior INF Michael Tousignant (5-foot-10, 135 pounds) scoring the lone run after initially walking to get on base.

6. Rancho Cucamonga Etiwanda (1-0) — The Eagles are perfect in one-run games. Freshman INF Kyle Isbel (5-foot-5, 135 pounds) scored the only run in the season-opener vs. Chaffey. He crossed the plate following on a single by senior C/INF Michael Bradley (6-2, 190) in the bottom of the eighth inning.

7. Hesperia Oak Hills (1-1) — The Bulldogs are just starting to get a feel for the new season. The reigning CIF-Southern Section Division 5 champions extended their winning streak to 13 games with an win over MoVal Canyon Springs in the season opener, but were felled by La Sierra the following day.

8. Riverside King (0-2) — The Wolves certainly aren’t as bad as their minus-9 run-differential through two games suggests. Just a slow start, is all. On the upside, they scored runs in the sixth and seventh innings in a one-run loss to No. 4 Redlands East Valley on Saturday.

9. Woodcrest Christian (0-0) — The Royals have alums currently pitching collegiately here in Riverside. Caleb Dirks is a freshman at Cal Baptist, while Matt Chabot is a sophomore, and Michael Davis a freshman, at Riverside CC.
