Prep Preview: Crenshaw at Santiago

I’m covering the Los Angeles Crenshaw-Corona Santiago varsity football game tonight for The Press-Enterprise. The best part of this assignment is that it’s the first game of QB Michael Darr’s senior season.

THE LOW DOWN:
Crenshaw finished third in the Coliseum League in 2011 but lost three of its last four — including a 31-7 loss to San Pedro in the 1st Round of the CIF-City Section playoffs — to end the season on a down note. The Cougars are coached by Robert Garret, who will lean his team’s strength — speed — and hope it translates into wins.

Santiago qualified for the CIF-Southern Section playoffs for the first time since 2009 but were beaten up in the 1st Round, 63-21, by Covina Charter Oak. Coach Jeff Steinberg finds himself with a load of experience, not the least of which is Darr, who will be beginning his third varsity season as the Sharks’ starter.

THE KEY PLAYERS:

Corona Santiago — QB: Michael Darr, Sr. (5-foot-10, 170 pounds); RB: Kaion Turner, Sr. (5-9, 165); Tyrone Willis (5-8, 175); WR: Dorion Barnett, Sr. (6-3, 205); Adam Brooks (5-10, 180); A.J. K: Dylan Roberts, Sr. (5-11, 170).

THE DIFFERENCE:
Santiago’s offensive cohesion, experience and belief that this could be the Sharks’ season. Darr and Barnett should begin their season-long love-affair by connecting upwards of 10 times for big plays and a couple of TDs.
THE FINAL SCORE: Santiago 35, Crenshaw 24
