Prep Preview: Norte Vista at King

I’m covering the Riverside Norte Vista-Riverside King varsity football game tonight for The Press-Enterprise and HSGameTime.com. The best part of this assignment is going to be witnessing King break their 14-game losing streak. That’s right, FOMB’s predicting a Wolves victory.

THE LOW DOWN:
These to programs have not faced each other in nine seasons dating back to when both were part of the Sunkist League in 2003. This will be their fifth all-time meeting, with each having won twice.

Norte Vista (0-0) and Coach Ken Batdorf are attempting to reload following the graduation of two-year starting RB Ryan Ruiz. It’ll br a tough task, but Batdorf will lean heavily on senior Sal Cena (6-foot-3, 210 pounds) to carry the load. Cena may not get a ton of carries, but he should some to go along with whatever touches he gets at TE. Cena will also play a combination LB/DE hybrid, with his primary job being to separate the ball-carrier from the ball.

King (0-0) begin their second season under Coach Kevin Corridan, a veteran of the local coaching scene with stops including Riverside CC. Yes, it’s true that the Wolves were winless last season. There’s no denying it. But what these players can change is 2012, this season, tonight. Junior QB Brent Hollingsworth (6-foot-3, 190 pounds) has all the physical tools — including a terrific arm — but must run an effective offense if King is to make any strides this season. Senior RB/DB Milan Brass (5-10, 180) came on well at the end of last season and should continue to progress beginning tonight.

KEY PLAYERS:
 Norte Vista — QB: Justin Spillman, Sr. (5-foot-7, 160 pounds); DB/WR: Jorge Manzo, Sr. (6-foot, 160); DE/TE: Sal Cena (6-3, 220); MLB/FB: Ulysis Leon, Sr. (5-9, 215); OLB: Ryan Brown, Sr. (5-11, 160); DE/OG: Eric Mestas, Sr. (5-10, 175); LB/DE: Joe Jolley, Jr. (6-2, 190); OT/DT: Adrian Acosta, Sr. (6-3, 240); OT/DT: David Melendrez, Jr. (6-2, 220)

King — QB: Brent Hollingsworth, Jr. (6-foot-4, 190 pounds); RB/LB: Logan Newman, Sr. (6-foot, 195); RB/DB: Milan Brass, Sr. (5-10, 180); WR/DB: Terrelle Smith Jr., Jr. (5-11, 175); RB/LB: Avery Richardson, Sr. (6-foot, 200); OL/DL: Josh Walker, Sr. (6-3, 300); WR/DB: Garrett Kelley, Sr. (6-3, 180); TE/DL: Gage Lackey, Jr. (6-4, 200).

THE DIFFERENCE:
How bad King’s players need victory. It was the only school in Riverside to not win a game in 2011, and that should be enough motivation to push the Wolves to a convincing win.
THE FINAL SCORE: King 34, Norte Vista 21
