Prep Preview: Norco at Roosevelt

I’m covering the Norco-Eastvale Roosevelt varsity football game tonight for The Press-Enterprise and HSGametime.pe.com. The best part of this assignment is that it’s FOMB’s first look at this budding rivalry.

THE LOW DOWN:
The teams have met five times previously, with each trading victories beginning with their first game in 2007. Norco won the first matchup, 29-21, and until last season (a 42-7 Norco victory) none of the games has had wider than an eight-point margin of victory.

Norco (3-4 overall, 1-1 Big VIII) is probably ripe with indignation following its 38-37 loss to Corona Centennial last week. Junior QB Coltin Gerhart had one of his better performances, but the defense was just mowed down by Centennial QB Robert Webber and the Huskies offense in the final two minutes. Gerhart is the Big VIII League’s top scorer with 80 points, and its second leading rusher behind teammate Joseph Ajeigbe. The two have combined to gain 1,793 yards in addition to Gerhart’s nearly 800 yards passing. Offensively, this team has two standout weapons, but as for the rest of the team…

Roosevelt (2-5 overall, 1-1 Big VIII) couldn’t keep pace with Corona Santiago in Week 7 and eventually lost by two touchdowns to the Michael Darr Express. The Mustangs must rebound tonight if they’re intent on reaching the playoffs, as Coach Tony Barile so ardently thinks this team is capable of doing. “I want to make the playoffs now,” he said following their homecoming loss to Santiago. Senior QB Joseph Muriel is a play-maker with several decent weapons with which to make plays. Problem is, the Mustangs defense is allowing more than 28 points per game so it almost doesn’t matter how well Muriel plays.
