Inland Area Prep Soccer Top 10

PRESEASON 2012-’13

1. Moreno Valley Valley View (0-0-0) — The champs. The first Inland Area soccer program to win a CIF-Southern Section D1 or D2 title since who… Poly, way back? Gone for the Eagles, however, are Alex Turkson and Miguel Hernandez. Who will pair with senior MF Jason Goicochea (7 goals last season) to make this team dangerous again?
LAST RANKED: (No. 1).
LAST SEASON: 21-2-3 overall, 11-1-2 Inland Valley League.
LAST GAME: def. Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley, 1-0 in OT, in a CIF-Southern Section Division 2 title game 3/2.
NEXT FIXTURE: vs. non-league Rubidoux 11/26.

2. Fontana (0-0-0) — Don’t kid yourself. The Steelers are as deep as any team in the Inland Area, ranging from senior MF Paulo Fonseca (6 goals, 6 asst. last season) to sophomore Jonathan Suarez (4 goals, 9 asst. last season). Loads of attacking talent but will this team work on defense?
LAST RANKED: (No. 2).
LAST SEASON: 21-2-1 overall, 13-1-1 Citrus Belt League.
LAST GAME: lost, 3-2, to Oxnard Channel Islands in a CIF-Southern Section Division 3 Quarterfinal Round game on 2/23.
NEXT FIXTURE: vs. non-league Rialto Eisenhower TODAY.

3. Hesperia Oak Hills (0-0-0) — The Bulldogs hung around long enough to make an appearance in a CIF State playoff game, but could not repeat their feats of 2010-’11. Is there much reason to think Coach Darren Goodman’s won’t at least be the best team in the High Desert?
LAST RANKED: (No. 3).
LAST SEASON: 23-3-3 overall, 9-2-1 Mojave River League.
LAST GAME: lost, 1-0, to Lindsey in a CIF-SoCal Regional Division 2 Semifinal Round game on 3/6.
NEXT FIXTURE: TBD.

4. Claremont (0-0-0) — A team in transition. Can Coach Fred Bruce-Oliver continue to produce top-tier teams in an ultra-competitive atmosphere that builds upon the Wolfpack’s recent successes?

NEXT FIXTURE: vs. Glendora 12/6.

5. Lake Elsinore Lakeside (1-0-0) — The Lancers are building upon something special, and are heretofore defending something important: championship aspirations. Coach Colin Gilliland finally has some stroke over some of the trendy club teams in the Southwestern part of Riverside County.

LAST SEASON: 23-5-5 overall, 9-1-4 San Andreas League.
LAST GAME: lost, 3-1, to No. 5 Lake Elsinore Lakeside in the CIF-Southern Section Division 5 title game on 3/3.
NEXT FIXTURE: at non-league No. 4 Lake Elsinore Lakeside 12/4.

8. Riverside Poly (0-0-0) — The Bears, now in the Inland Valley League, will challenge No. 1 NoVal Valley View all season. Coach Alex Figueroa’s teams are usually flooded with midfielders, with few real scoring threats. Wonder if that’ll change this season.
LAST RANKED: (No. 8).
LAST SEASON: 18-5-3 overall, 11-2-1 Big VIII League.
LAST GAME: lost, 3-1, to Thermal Coachella Valley in a CIF-SS Division 2 2nd Round game on 2/21.
NEXT FIXTURE: at non-league Ontario Chaffey 11/27.

9. Riverside La Sierra (0-0-0) — Memories of a mind-boggling collapse in a semifinal will linger over this team for a while. It’ll be interesting to see of Coach Dave Eckenrod turns a negative into a positive.
LAST RANKED: (No. 9).
LAST SEASON: 18-5-5 overall, 9-3-2 Inland Valley League.
LAST GAME: lost, 2-1, to Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley in a CIF-Southern Section Division 2 Semifinal Round game on 2/28.
NEXT FIXTURE: vs. non-league Jurupa Hills TODAY.
