Prep Preview: Poly at Ramona

I’m covering the Riverside Poly-Riverside Ramona varsity football game tonight, Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, for The Press-Enterprise and HSGametime.com.

The best part of this assignment is that this is the third consecutive year I’ve covered the Solar Series, or the oldest rivalry among high schools in the City of Riverside.

THE LOW DOWN:
The Bears (0-1 overall) have begun the Dennis Brown Era 0-1 after a competitive but ultimately losing effort last week vs. FOMB No. 4 Perris Citrus Hill. However, the Bears appear to have some options in the running game after David Samuelu led the team with 100 yards and one TD on 13 carries in the loss.

The Rams (1-0) are off to their first winning start since who knows when after Damon Dustin’s side pulled of a 38-28 victory over Rubidoux. QB Damon Mayes completed 9 of 19 attempts for 186 yards and three TDs, and Chantrail Lathon had 136 rushing yards and one TD in this victory.

THE KEY PLAYERS:
Poly
— QB: Chandler Drachslin (Jr., 6-2, 170). RBs: Devontre Hale (Jr., 5-10, 180), David Samuelu (Sr., 5-11, 190). WR/DB: Ykili Ross (Jr., 6-1, 185); LaMet Fowler (Jr., 5-10, 160): Anthony Banks (Sr., 5-11, 186); LB/TE: Chris Navigato (Sr., 5-11, 205); LB: Leighton Silva (Sr., 5-8, 200); DL: Benjamin Tualenga (Jr., 6-0, 2-5); Koron Lowe (Jr., 5-9, 200).

Ramona — QB: Damon Mayes (Sr., 6-4, 215); RB: Chantrail Lathon (Jr. 5-10, 192); WR/P: Lorenzo Cabrera (Sr., 6-2, 170); RB/LB: Brandon Lefevre (Sr., 5-10, 221); ATH: Chris Kilgore (Soph., 5-11, 173); RB/S: Larry Sosa (Sr., 5-8, 160); Byron Mayes (Jr., 6-2, 175); DE/T: Hosea Huff (Sr., 6-3, 220); WR/CB: Henry Batista (Sr., 5-9, 145); NG: Art Cabrera (Sr., 6-3, 345).

THE DIFFERENCE:
Not sure there is much of one. Both have leaders at quarterback and a budding rushing game. Ramona hasn’t won since 1997 but there a sense the Rams are due.
THE FINAL SCORE: Ramona 28, Poly 24
