Prep Preview: Cajon at REV

I’m covering the San Bernardino Cajon-Redlands East Valley varsity football game on Friday, Oct. 11, 2013 for The Press-Enterprise and HSGametime.com.

The best part of this assignment is that it’ll be my first-ever visit to Redlands Citrus Valley High School.

cajonLOGOThe Cowboys (2-3 overall) are giving the ball to RB Christopher Boston at every opportunity and he’s averaging more than six yards per carry and 125 yards per game. Trouble is, the 5-10, 175-pounder already has carried it 103 times through five games and has just one 200-yard performance and just three TDs to show for it, and he ran for nearly half his season total (254 of 634) and two TDs in a Week 4 win over Corona. Offensively, Coach Kim Battin needs to mix it up.

The Wildcats (1-4 overall) have been beat up by a brutal non-league schedule and are now starting a freshman, Armando Herrera, at quarterback. Herrera surprised with a pair of touchdowns in last week’s 47-21 loss to Mission Viejo, and wouldn’t be in there unless Coach Kurt Bruich was convinced he needed him. Already thin at QB to start the season, Coach Kurt Bruich lost starter Mark Neilssien in Week 4 when he broke a bone in his throwing hand. He played cornerback vs. Mission Viejo.

revLOGOTHE KEY PLAYERS:
Cajon — QB: Edward Kilpatrick (Soph., 5-8, 160); RB: Chris Boston (Sr., 5-10, 170); Gavin Westover (Jr., 5-11, 165); OL: Kyle Brott (Jr., 6-5, 330); LB: Eric Garcia (Soph., 6-2, 190); CB: Arick Cohen (Sr., 6-1, 170).

REV — QB: Armando Herrera (Fr., 6-foot, 150); RB: Anthony Valverde (Sr., 5-9, 210); C: Peter Seumalo (Sr., 6-2, 275); LB: Trey Oliphant (Sr., 6-foot, 185); DB: Hakeim Mackenzie IV (Jr., 5-8, 190); Mark Neilssien (Sr., 5-9, 185).

THE DIFFERENCE: At some point, probably tonight, depth begins to play a factor and REV’s 83-man roster finally overwhelms an opponent. Also, expect the WIldcats’ tough-as-nails non-league experience to show up in the second half.
THE FINAL SCORE: REV 28, Cajon 14
