Prep Preview: Centennial at King

I’m covering the Corona Centennial-Riverside King varsity football game on Friday, Oct. 18, 2013, for The Press-Enterprise and HSGametime.com.

The best part of this assignment will be witnessing whether or not King gets crushed.

centennialLOGOTHE LOW DOWN:
The Huskies (4-2 overall, 1-0 Big VIII) are fresh off a big TV appearance in which the dominated rival Norco and Tre Watson rushed for 375-plus yards and three touchdowns in the victory.

Watson is looking like the front-runner in this year’s race for Inland Area Player of the Year. He’s totaled 1,568 yards and 23 touchdowns in six games and shows no signs of slowing as defense isn’t exactly the calling card of the Big VIII.

The Wolves (6-0 overall, 10 Big VIII) are unbeaten heading into Week 7 for the first time in school history. Without much doubt this is the biggest game of the Kevin Corridan era, and the team’s biggest this decade.

Jacob Rodgers and the Wolves’ offense scored a season-low 21 points but still found a way to squeak past Corona last week. That game likely was for fifth place in the Big VIII, however, and not a playoff determiner. A victory this week could upend the CIF-Southern Section Inland Division.

kingLOGO2THE KEY PLAYERS:
Centennial — QB: Robert Webber (Sr. 5-10, 170); RB: Tre Watson (Sr., 5-11, 195); WR: Greyson Bankhead (Jr., 5-10, 160); Barry Ware (Sr., 6-3, 205); OL: Viane Talamaivo (Sr., 6-3, 330); DL: Jaylen Johnson (Sr., 6-4, 240); LB: Xavier Hughes (Sr., 6-1, 200).

King — QB: Jacob Rogers (Jr., 6-2, 170); RB: Juwan Washington (Jr., 5-9, 160); WR: Terrelle Smith (Jr., 5-10, 180); WR/DB: T.J. Noland (Jr., 5-11, 160); LB: Ray Basurto (Sr., 6-1, 210); OL: Sean Krepsz (Sr., 6-5, 295); DB: David Reynolds (Sr., 5-11, 185).

THE DIFFERENCE:
The Huskies have five or six guys who are impact players at the next level. King might have one, maybe two, so it’s still a numbers game here, and until the skill level rises on Wood Street the difference will be clear.
THE FINAL SCORE: Centennial 45, King 21
