Prep Preview: Centennial at Roosevelt

I’m covering the Corona Centennial-Eastvale Roosevelt varsity football game on Friday, Oct. 25, 2013, for The Press-Enterprise and HSGametime.com.

The best part of this assignment will be watching two of the Inland Area’s most prolific offenses going toe-to-toe in a Big VIII League showdown.

centennialLOGOTHE LOW DOWN:
The Huskies (5-2 overall, 2-0 Big VIII) put up 70 points last week vs. Riverside King and are back to dominating teams the way they did before a two-game losing streak earlier this year put dogged doubt in the minds of some observers. RB Tre Watson is one of the best backs in the state, and is the Inland Area’s current rushing leader. DE Jaylen Johnson is a dominant force in the pass rush, but the Huskies’ pass defense has been suspect.

RooseveltThe Mustangs (4-3 overall, 0-2 Big VIII) have high hopes for 2013 and a lot of them rest on the result of this game. Second-year coach Tony Barile knows how to build a passing attack and has a QB in Joseph Muriel that can orchestrate his offense. Will Muriel and WRs Praise Obiezu, Marcus Williams, Anthony Spencer and Jaylen Brown step up to the task of dissecting Centennial’s weakest points long enough to overcome however many touchdowns their porous defense has allowed?

THE KEY PLAYERS:
Centennial
— QB: Robert Webber (Sr. 5-10, 170); RB: Tre Watson (Sr., 5-11, 195); WR: Greyson Bankhead (Jr., 5-10, 160); Barry Ware (Sr., 6-3, 205); OL: Viane Talamaivo (Sr., 6-3, 330); DL: Jaylen Johnson (Sr., 6-4, 240); LB: Xavier Hughes (Sr., 6-1, 200).

Roosevelt — QB: Joseph Muriel (Sr., 6-2, 205); RB: James Carradine (Jr., 5-11, 180); WRs: Praise Obiezu (Sr., 6-3, 185); Marcus Williams (Sr., 6-1, 170); LB: Afa Green (Sr., 6-foot, 170); CB: Kionce Roberts (Sr., 5-8, 155); S: Evan Tyler (6-foot, 165).

THE DIFFERENCE:
Tre Watson. Pretty simple, really. The Huskies are going to run it with Watson until Roosevelt’s defense stacks the box with eight. That’s when Robert Webber goes to work with his arsenal of weapons until the game is out of reach.
THE FINAL SCORE: Centennial 55, Roosevelt 38
