Prep Preview: La Sierra at Moreno Valley

I’m covering the Riverside La Sierra-Moreno Valley varsity football game on Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, for The Press-Enterprise and HSGametime.com.

The best part about this is assignment is… wait a minute… I’ll think of something…

LaSierraLOGOTHE LOW DOWN:
The Eagles (2-7 overall, 2-2 River Valley) are in need of mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. They lost a heart-breaker to Riverside Ramona, 32-28, in Week 9, when a victory vs. the Rams would’ve given them three league wins and lessened the need for victory tonight but Coach Jeff Roney’s team absolutely must beat MoVal if it hopes to play next week. How they do it is beyond understanding at this point, unless the McCoy brothers can combine for 30 points and 30 tackles.

The Vikings (7-2 overall, 3-1 River Valley) are compiling some impressive stats. Coach Ted Wadkins’ team only two losses are to playoff teams (Paloma Valley and Norte Vista) and were by a combined total of 13 points. They have two QBs (Dane Wadkins, Justice Tyler) who have passed for more than 600 yards and at least seven TDs, and six RBs with at least 150 yards and one TD. Their rushing attack, in all, has gained more than 2,300 yards and is averaging more than 6.8 yards per carry.

MoValLOGOTHE KEY PLAYERS:
La Sierra — QB: Derrick Cruz (Jr., 5-10, 175); RB: Jonathan McCoy (Sr., 5-9, 180); TE/LB: Steven Hak (Sr., 5-11, 195); Jordan McCoy (Jr., 5-11, 195); OL/LB: Randy Hoffman (Jr., 5-10, 210); WR/DB: Windell Thompson (Jr., 6-1, 175); DB: Nathan Bates (Sr., 6-2, 175).

Moreno Valley — QB: Justice Tyler (Jr., 6-1, 180); Dane Wadkins (Jr., 5-11, 175); RB/CB: Amos Murphy (Sr., 5-7, 180); WR/CB: Anthony Bereal (Sr., 5-11, 170); OL: Christian Afereti (Sr., 6-4, 305); LB: Bernard Pula (Sr., 5-10, 175); FS: Justice Tyler (Jr., 6-1, 180).

THE DIFFERENCE:
There seems to be some ebb and flow to the Vikings’ ability to reach the playoffs. Coach Wadkins produced playoff teams in 2006, ’07 and ’08, then not again until last season. Now he’s done it two consecutive years. The talent is there right now for MoVal be a CIF-SS Eastern Division semifinalist.
THE FINAL SCORE: Moreno Valley 38, La Sierra 14
