CLOSER LOOK: Norte Vista’s Victor Gonzalez

Take a closer look at Riverside Norte Vista senior Victor Gonzalez and you’ll see a kid halfway to Reno.

Gonzalez (6-foot-3, 180 pounds) accepted a scholarship offer to play football and study at the Univ. of Neveda-Reno, and will enroll there as soon as he graduates from Norte Vista in June.

He didn’t have too much to say after the Braves came from behind to defeat San Bernardino San Gorgonio 38-37 in a CIF-Southern Section Eastern Division semifinal round game on Friday, Nov. 29, 2013, but answered my questions.

He didn’t have his best game of the season either with only two catches for 12 yards up to the point when he hauled in the game-winning 64-yard score with less than three minutes remaining in the game.

What happened on the game-winning catch?

“The whole game I wasn’t really on my game and I knew I had to come up big for my team ’cause they were going all-out so I knew I had to make a play for them. That’s what basically happened,” Gonzalez said.

Why weren’t you play so well early in the game?

“I made a bad play and it took me out of the play mentally,” he said.

What’s this mean for the program?

“It’s a big step for our team, and we’re proving everybody wrong.”

How has forfeiting of seven victories and the River Valley League title affected and motivated this team?

“All the adversity we’ve faced pushes us to want to take everything. Nothing can stop us,” he said.

You play Citrus Hill next week. Anything you can take from tonight into that game?

“We stopped (San Gorgonio) when we need to stop them,” Gonzalez said. “That’s what we’re going to do next week.”

Norte Vista (5-8 overall) hosts Perris Citrus Hills (12-1) in the division championship on Friday night. It’s only the Braves second appearance (1974) in a football title game.
