Prep Preview: St. Margaret’s at Jurupa Hills

I’m covering the San Juan Capistrano St. Margaret’s-Fontana Jurupa Hills CIF-Southern Section East Valley Division championship game on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013, for The Press-Enterprise and HSGametime.com.

The best part of this assignment will be watching to spread-formation offenses duke it out to claim the title of CIF-SS’ best small school.

StMargaretsLOGOTHE LOW DOWN:
St. Margaret’s (13-0 overall) is lean and mean and looking to re-forge its identity as the team to beat among small schools in the CIF-Southern Section. The Tartans won the 2006 CIF-State Small Schools championship under legendary coach Harry Welch and are back with fourth-year coach Rod Baltau. Senior QB/S Josh Davis is the engine that drives the offense, accounting for 43 TDs and more than 2,900 total yards.

jurupahillsLOGOJurupa Hills (11-2 overall), the only San Bernardino County school in a CIF title game, narrowly escaped the semifinals with a 40-39 victory over Upland Western Christian. Can QB/DB Damion Wright produce another 400-yard, four-TD performance like he did against Western Christian? Will the stage prove to bright for the Spartans, who are making their first CIF title game appearance in just their fourth year?

THE KEY PLAYERS:
St. Margaret’s — QB/S: Josh Davis; RB: Oscar Gomez; WR/DB: Preston Ellis; William Morrison; Tristan Walters; LT: Jake Bradley; LG/DE: Austin Hall; C/LB: Dalan Cragun; RG: Enrique Loya; RT: John McGlinn; DE: Jameson Edwards; DT: Nick Amoukhteh; LB/LS: Jake Hines; LBs: Matt Karzak; Ryan O’Hare; K: Charlie Beall.

Jurupa Hills — QB: Damion Wright (Sr., 6-2, 190); RB: Frank Saucedo (Sr., 5-9, 165); Ronnie Becerra (Sr., 5-8, 170); DeAndre Henderon (Sr., 6-foot, 180); WR: Derrick Spearmon (Jr., 6-2, 170); Danny Narvaez (Sr., 5-9, 175); LT: James Ruiz (Sr., 5-10, 265); LG: Jesus Millan (Sr., 5-11, 290); C: Lionel Crosby (Jr., 6-1, 260); RG: Alfonso Suarez (Sr., 5-10, 255) RT: Joshua Sparks (Sr., 6-6, 286); DE: Ricardo De La Torre (Sr., 6-foot, 260); NG: DeShire Singleton (Sr., 5-11, 255); DT: Raymond Franco (Sr., 6-4, 304); DE/OLB/P: Tyler Drake (Sr., 6-1, 225); LB: Garrett Wideen (Sr., 6-2, 205); Nikolas Navarro (Jr., 6-2, 225); Jamal Nelson (Sr., 5-10, 185); Manny James (Jr., 6-1, 180); DB: Eric Banks (Soph., 5-9, 145); Chris Steele (Jr., 5-10, 185); Thomas Collier (Sr., 6-foot, 175); LS: Ray Vaca (Jr., 5-8, 180); K: Oscar Medina (Sr., 5-7, 180).

THE DIFFERENCE:
Wright’s ability to break loose at any moment, and what appears to be an overwhelming advantage in size. I can’t imagine St. Margaret’s has a 300-pound kid chasing after opposing quarterbacks, or five guys protecting Davis who are at least 250 pounds.
THE FINAL SCORE: Jurupa Hills 32, St. Margaret’s 28
