Prep Preview: King at Centennial

I’m covering the Riverside King-Corona Centennial varsity football game tonight, Oct., 10, 2014, for The Press-Enterprise and PE.com.

The best part of this assignment is getting a look at arguably one of the Inland Area’s best running backs — Centennial’s J.J. Taylor and the Huskies resurgent offense — in my first trip to Rimpau Ave. this season.

kingLOGO2THE LOW DOWN:
The Wolves (3-2 overall) got three TDs and more than 250 rushing yards in a narrow 28-20 victory over MoVal Canyon Springs last week. Sophomore QB Karson Greeley is going through his growing pains (three TDs vs. seven INTs) and will need greater consistency if his team has legitimate playoff aspirations.

The Huskies (3-2 overall) are looking to build on a massive non-league schedule that saw them score 72 points in their last win vs. Valencia. The QB’ing situation is no less sorted and perhaps even more contorted, with Nate Ketteringham and Anthony Catalano still vying for the affections Coach Matt Logan.

centennialLOGOTHE KEY PLAYERS:
Riverside King
— QB Karson Greeley (Soph., 6-foot-4, 185 pounds); RB/LB Ben Garcia (Sr., 5-8, 170); WR/DB Deshawn Jackson (Sr., 6-foot, 175); RB/S Devin Moeller (Sr., 6-foot, 170); WR/DB Terrell Bowie (Sr., 6-foot, 175); C/DL Ryan Johs (Sr., 6-2, 240).

Corona Centennial — Nate Ketteringham (Sr., 6-foot-4, 190); Anthony Catalano (Jr., 5-10, 165); RB/KR J.J. Taylor (Jr., 5-6, 160); Greyson Bankhead (Sr., 5-11, 160); OL Sid Acosta (Sr., 6-2, 275); DL Tucker Robinson (Sr., 6-1, 215); LB Zach Brumbaugh (Jr., 5-11, 220); SS Jihree Stewart (Sr., 6-foot, 180); S Chacho Ulloa (Jr., 6-foot, 185).

THE DIFFERENCE:
Centennial’s offense has an unblemished against King’s defense, winning eight consecutive games since the inception of the Big VIII League. Is this the year the Wolves really go on the hunt? Probably not.
THE FINAL SCORE: Centennial 38, King 20
