Prep Preview: Jurupa Valley vs. Hillcrest

I’m covering the Jurupa Valley-Riverside Hillcrest varsity football game tonight, Thursday, Oct. 16, 2014, for The Press-Enterprise and PE.com.

The best part of this assignment will be covering Hillcrest — playing its first varsity season — for the first time.

JurupaValleyLOGOTHE LOW DOWN:
Jurupa Valley (3-3 overall, 1-0 River Valley) scored a massive 15-13 victory over Riverside Ramona to open league play and catapult into playoff consideration. The Jaguars — and their experienced offensive line — must continue to perform with a level of consistency because the schedule gets much tougher after this game.

Hillcrest (0-6 overall, 0-1 River Valley) is coming off a 56-0 loss to Riverside La Sierra in its league opener. This will be the fifth of seven games at Alvord Stadium this season for the Trojans, who have yet to field a senior class and have scored 20-or-more points in just three games this season.

HillcrestLOGOTHE KEY PLAYERS:
Jurupa Valley
— QB Rudy Valdez (5-foot-10, 161 pounds); RB Jorge Camacho (Sr., 5-8, 191); OL Brandon Parker (Sr., 6-3, 275); OL Frank Martinez (Sr., 6-6, 250); C Michael Spaise (Sr., 6-foot, 260); LB Wade Gazafy (Sr.; 6-foot, 220).

Hillcrest — QB Alex Garcia (Jr., 6-foot-2, 170 pounds); TB Demetrick Watts (Jr., 5-10, 230); DE Justin Salazar (Jr., 5-10, 215); S Simon Wright (Jr., 6-foot, 165); MLB Patrick Moseley (Jr., 5-10, 175).

THE DIFFERENCE:
Who knows? A team full of seniors should beat up on a bunch of juniors and sophomores but Hillcrest NEEDS to win like California NEEDS water. This is a game in which anything could happen.
THE FINAL SCORE: Jurupa Valley 20, Hillcrest 12
