Prep Preview: Riverside King at Norco

I’m covering the Riverside King-Norco varsity football game tonight, Friday, Oct. 24, 2014, for The Press-Enterprise and PE.com.

The best part of this assignment will getting a look at Norco QB Victor Viramontes for what will probably be the last time. The Cougars’ signal caller is one of the Inland Area’s premier offensive threats.

kingLOGO2THE LOW DOWN:
The Wolves (3-4 overall, 0-2 Big VIII) have opened league play with a whimper (again), and Coach Kevin Corridan is scrambling (again) to get this team to the playoffs despite losses to both Centennial and Santiago. Sophomore QB Brad Kleven has taken over for Karson Greeley (arm), and accounted for three TDs in a 49-35 loss last week to Santiago.

The Cougars (3-4 overall, 2-0 Big VIII) have rallied from a rough non-league schedule, and remain unbeaten in league after Viramontes totaled four TDs in a tougher-than-usual 37-36 win over Corona last week. As first-year coach Charles Chastain continues to rattle the cage at Norco, is a Top 3 league finish and a playoff spot in line with games against Santiago and Centennial still to play?

norcoLOGOTHE KEY PLAYERS:
King
— QB Brad Kleven (Soph., 6-foot-4, 175 pounds); RB/LB Ben Garcia (Sr., 5-8, 170); WR Kade Greeley (Soph, 6-5, 175); WR/DB Deshawn Jackson (Sr., 6-foot, 175); RB/S Devin Moeller (Sr., 6-foot, 170); WR/DB Terrell Bowie (Sr., 6-foot, 175); C/DL Ryan Johs (Sr., 6-2, 240).

Norco — QB Victor Viramontes (Sr., 6-foot-2, 215 pounds); RB Gaven Hughes (Jr., 5-8, 165); WR Cameron Sutton (Sr., 6-6, 196); C Craig Johnson (Sr., 6-1, 275); DL Anthony Bravo (Sr., 5-7, 180); CB Brandon Mills (Sr., 6-1, 190); SS Troy Dye (Jr., 6-3, 200); CB/WR/KR Aisi Vaea (Sr., 5-8, 185).

THE DIFFERENCE:
Viramontes’ ability to make something from nothing. This game will devolve — as sure as I sit here writing this — into one or two broken plays that will decide the game. If Viramontes can get outside the pocket and into the second level of King’s defense then those broken plays will likely go for large gains.
THE FINAL SCORE: Norco 24, King 17
