Prep Preview: Rubidoux at Ramona

I’m covering the Rubidoux-Riverside Ramona CIF-Southern Section Eastern Division First Round playoff game tonight, Friday, Nov. 13, 2015, for The Press-Enterprise, pe.com & @PEcom_sports.

The best part of this assignment is the spotlight placed on this game after a scheduling reshuffle by CIF resulted in a rematch of a Week 0 game.

rubidoux2LOGOTHE LOW DOWN:
The Falcons (8-2 overall, 3-2 Mountain Valley) beat Ramona, 17-7, in Week 0 but needed wins in their final two games to secure a playoff spot, edging Banning, 43-34, in Week 10 to get in. Initially slotted to play Palm Desert in the first round, it was decided on Monday by CIF-SS officials that they’d instead play Ramona. Senior RB Robert Taylor has become the leading force for first-year head coach Patrick Thompson, with multiple games of more than 100-plus yards down the stretch. Junior LB Brandon Carroll, a critical figure in their defense, was injured in Week 6. His presence will be needed in the middle.

ramonaHSThe Rams (8-2 overall, 4-1 River Valley) dusted off the program’s demons and are back in the playoffs for the first time in two years. The defense allowed just 51 points in league play, getting better and better with each game, while the offense got it done differently every week. Senior DE/OLB Kevin Johnson has shown glimpses of brilliance, and leads the team with 15 QB hurries. Freshman QB/RB/WR Omri Edwards has more than 1,000 total yards and 20 total TDs to reinforce his hype as one of the up-and-coming playmakers in the Inland Area.

THE KEY PLAYERS:
Rubidoux — QB Ryan Parker (Sr., 5-foot-11, 165 pounds); RB Robert Taylor (Sr., 6-foot, 185); CB/RB/KR Roosevelt Carroll (Sr., 5-7, 165); CB/RB/FS Devante Martin (Sr., 5-8, 160); TE/SS/K Jonathan Garibay (Jr., 6-2, 210); SS/FB/RB Joey Ornales (Sr., 5-10, 190); DE/TE/FB Paul Garcia (Jr., 6-foot, 220); LB/FB Brandon Carroll (Jr., 5-9, 225); DE/T/G Jasobeam Reyes (Sr., 6-2, 240).

Ramona — QB Noah Anderson (Jr., 6-foot-3, 175 pounds); RB/DB Paul Garcia (Sr., 5-9, 195); RB/WR/CB Omri Edwards (Soph., 5-9, 160); WR/SS Andrew Morning (Sr., 6-3, 190); RB/DB David Avila (Jr., 5-7, 175); LB/RB/WR Taiwo Olawuyi (Jr., 5-11, 205); TE/LB/P Joey Parra (Sr., 6-1, 213); DB/WR Nate Williams (Sr., 6-foot, 170); OL/DL Jeremiah Wilson (Sr., 6-4, 220); DL/TE Kevin Johnson (Sr., 6-1, 245).

THE DIFFERENCE:
How much Ramona’s defense has improved 20 games into head coach Vinny Fazio’s tenure. This’ll be game 21, and a poignant test for the Rams.

THE FINAL SCORE:
Riverside Ramona 34, Rubidoux 31
