Prep Preview: Claremont vs. REV

I’m covering the Claremont-Redlands East Valley boys varsity soccer game tonight, Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015. Kickoff is set for 4:15 p.m. PT.

The best part of this assignment is that it’s between two of the Inland Area’s best teams facing off in the championship game of the Tournament of Champions.

ClaremontLOGOTHE LOW DOWN:
Claremont (2-0-1 overall) are as stable as any program in the Inland Area, and maybe Southern California. Since his start in 1986, Coach Fred Bruce-Oliver has guided consistent winners, perennial league champions, CIF challengers and school record holders. This team looks to be rebuilding after the graduation of 13 seniors from last year’s side the went 18-2-4, won the Palomares League title and advanced to the CIF-SS Division 3 quarterfinals.

revLOGO
Redlands East Valley (4-0-1 overall) have it all working at the moment, having posted shutouts in their first four games and now a spot in the final of the Tournament of Champions. Coach Ted Small likes to extol the virtues of his team as much as anyone, and has had plenty of reason after three consecutive 20-plus win seasons. Inland Area Preseason Player Of The Year candidate Jonathan Garcia leads the Wildcats attack. He had double-digit goals and assists last season and is off the a hot start to his senior year.

THE STARTING XIs:
Claremont
— GK Nathan Armas (Sr., 6-foot-2); D Cameron Muyres (Sr., 5-8); D Cesar Hernandez (Sr., 5-10); D Dominic Luevano (Sr., 5-9); D Sean Renken (Jr., 5-8); MF Alex Alvarado (Jr., 5-9); MF Osvaldo Lopez (Jr., 5-9); MF Mateo Pacheco (Sr., 6-foot); MF Patrick Luevano (Sr., 5-8); MF/F Jack Kolodge (Sr., 5-11); F Nick Loeffler (Sr., 6-foot); F Thomas Beck (Sr., 5-10).

Redlands East Valley — GK Rene Gonzales (Sr.); D Tony Sidor (Sr.); D Evan Garcia (Sr.); D Kyle Toth (Sr.); D Jacob Gutierrez (Sr.); D Tyler Crawley (Jr.); MF Justin Litchfield (Jr.); MF Jarod Nelson (Sr.); MF/F Jonathan Garcia (Sr.); F Jesus Delgado (Sr.); F Francisco Hernandez (Sr.).

THE DIFFERENCE:
Jonathan Garcia at any moment he has the ball at his feet. He’s too good to not be a factor in every game this season.

THE FINAL SCORE:
REV 2, Claremont 1
