Prep Preview: Jurupa Hills at San Gorgonio

I’m covering the Fontana Jurupa Hills-San Bernardino San Gorgonio varsity baseball game today, May 5, 2016, for Southern California Newspaper Group.

First pitch is set for 3:15 p.m.

jurupahillsLOGOTHE LOW DOWN:
Jurupa Hills (15-8 overall, 9-3 San Andreas) moved itself into a tie for first place in the SAL behind senior LHP Matt Vigil’s 1-0 shutout on Tuesday. Vigil (8-2, 0.65 ERA) scattered two hits and walked two while striking out nine for his first shutout and fifth complete game of the season. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound senior and has been sort of a one-man wrecking crew for the Spartans, also leading the team in batting (.435 BA) and RBI (24). Freshman SS Diego Armas may be the best first-year players in the league, posting a .432 BA, 35 hits and 16 stolen bases through 23 games.

SanGorgonioLOGOSan Gorgonio (18-5 overall, 9-3 San Andreas) had won five consecutive games until this week, and will look to get back to scoring runs in bunches. Long-time coach Bill Eatinger’s team had scored 11-or-more runs in four of their last seven games, totaling 105 runs in league thus far, but are now 0-2 vs. Jurupa Hills this season after Tuesday’s shutout loss. Offensively, junior C/1B Angel Ochoa has 27 RBI on just 26 hits with help from a team-high three HRs, while senior SS Jason Wright tops San G. with a .426 BA, 23 runs and 13 SBs. Wright (3-3, 30 Ks in 31 IP) also is among Eatinger’s top pitching options.

Jurupa Hills — SS Diego Armas, Fr. (5-foot-6, 140 pounds); P/1B/OF Hayden Heinze, Sr. (6-1, 165); P/DH Roland Placencia, Sr. (5-7, 180); C Daniel Rojas, Jr. (5-11, 160); P/1B Matt Vigil, Sr. (6-2, 210); 3B Ignacio Zamora, Soph. (5-9, 150)

San Gorgonio — INF Bryan Delgado, Soph. (5-foot-7, 160 pounds); P/INF Chris Hardin, Soph. (5-11, 160); OF/1B Dylan Konoho, Jr. (6-4, 180); C/1B Angel Ochoa, Jr. (5-10, 225); OF Brian Rivera, Soph. (5-10, 160); SS/P Jason Wright, Sr. (5-8, 175)

This game will hinge on the level of starting pitching on both sides. With Vigil unavailable for Jurupa Hills, San Gorgonio could hold a slight advantage.

San Gorgonio 3, Jurupa Hills 2
