PREP PREVIEW: Riverside Poly @ Rancho Verde
Covering the Riverside Poly-MoVal Rancho Verde varsity girls soccer game tonight, Friday, Feb. 3, 2017, for The Press-Enterprise and @PEcom_preps. The winner will move into first place in the Inland Valley League going into the final week of the regular season next week.
First kick is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Moreno Valley Rancho Verde High School.
Riverside Poly (11-9-1 overall, 6-0-1 Inland Valley) is unbeaten over its last five games, a streak that started with a 2-2 tie vs. MoVal Rancho Verde at home on Wednesday, Jan. 18. The Bears have scored 20 goals in five games since — including a 10-0 win over Riverside North on Jan. 25 — and are riding a four-game winning streak into tonight’s game. The streak has put the team in playoff positioning heading into the final week of the regular season, and all the more impressive considering the team’s four-game losing streak to end 2016. They’re now 6-1-1 since Jan. 1.
HEAD COACH: Katie Rumfola
MoVal Rancho Verde (10-6-2 overall, 6-0-1 Inland Valley) is unbeaten over its last seven games to give itself a shot at first place in league. The unbeaten streak must rank among the best runs in the program’s history, which does not yet include a league title. Sarah Tatum has become the goal scorer her team needed, but has missed games because of injury. Goalkeeper Sophia Cortez has allowed just two goals over the Mustangs’ last four games, and will probably need to be quick to the ball tonight to control the space behind her defenders.
HEAD COACH: Adam Bowlan
ONE THING IN PARTICULAR…
MoVal’s girls soccer program hasn’t really been much until this season. The Mustangs, however, are primed for the playoffs.
IT’S ANYONE’S GUESS BUT…
