GAME OF THE WEEK: North vs. Grand Terrace

THE DETAILS:
Riverside North vs. Grand Terrace
CIF-Southern Section – Week 0
Nonleague
At Grand Terrace (Calif.) High School
Kickoff: 7 p.m. PT on Friday, Aug. 23

RIVERSIDE NORTH (0-0 overall, 0-0 Inland Valley League) could come away the favorite to win the IVL if it can pull off a victory in Week 0, but the defense will have to be up to the task against a very pass-oriented offense. Most eyes on the Huskies’ sideline will be fixed on sophomore RB Venasio Mikaele as he makes his sophomore season debut, but the Huskies have a QB situation that may or may not be settled heading into their opener. Can all-around playmaker Coryon Rayford separate himself, or is senior David Bulger better suited to the spot right now?
HEAD COACH: Dennis Brown
ROSTER – QB: Coryon Rayford, Jr. (5-foot-10, 160 pounds); RB: Venasio Mikaele, Soph. (5-9, 200); WR: Jadon Adams, Sr. (5-10, 180); WR: Kavon Baptiste, Jr. (6-3, 180); OL: Austin Berry, Jr. (6-4, 245); DE: Michael McCullough, Sr. (6-3, 230); DB: Dylan Kurtz, Sr. (5-11, 160); K: Taren Schive, Jr. (6-foot, 160)

GRAND TERRACE (0-0 overall, 0-0 Sunkist League) has a lot of expectations being thrust their way, both locally and regionally, what with an outstanding senior quarterback and now the No. 1 ranking the 2019 preseason CIF-Southern Section Division 8 poll. With so much riding on his final season, will senior QB Mekhi Lewis’ first game be an indication of his whole season? Can junior DT David Gusta assert himself against early and often enough to effect the home opener? Is senior WR Lonzel Bradford big enough to make it as a full-time receiver? There are a lot of questions.
HEAD COACH: Ryan Smalls
ROSTER – QB: Mekhi Lewis, Sr. (6-foot-2, 190 pounds); RB: Malachi Compton III, Sr. (5-6, 185); WR: Lonzel Bradford, Sr. (5-9, 162); WR: Damion Williams, Sr. (6-1, 170); WR: Ted Franklin, Sr. (5-11, 165); DT: David Gusta, Jr. (6-4, 260); LB: Troy Steptoe, Sr. (5-10, 180); DB: Austin Kearns, Sr. (5-9, 140)

THE DIFFERENCE:
Lewis’ pocket presence and maturity will likely be defining factors in this game and in this season for Grand Terrace.

THE FINAL SCORE (PROJECTED):
Grand Terrace 30, Riverside North 24
