CLOSER LOOK: Norco’s Kyle Crum

Take a closer look at Norco junior Kyle Crum and you might be looking at the best quarterback in the Big VIII League.

Crum has stepped into a leadership role on offense for the Cougars (1-0 overall, 1-0 Big VIII League), who are looking at 2021 as the year the knock off Corona Centennial and regain the throne.

The 6-foot-4 quarterback got a taste at the end of the 2019 season and was a regular at Winner’s Circle over the winter, playing games in that modified prep league before high schools re-opened.

Crum has the build to get next-level looks, and just dashing enough to play the leading man. He’ll be one to watch for over the next couple of seasons.

We caught up with Crum after Norco’s 51-6 victory over Corona Santiago in Week 1-A on Thursday, March 18. Crum completed 17 of 23 pass attempts for 235 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Cougars to its first victory of 2021. How did it feel to be in command of the offense for the first time in 2021?
Kyle Crum: “It felt amazing. After nine months of practicing and not being sure if we’re going to get to play this season, to come out and put a good number on the scoreboard, it just feels great.”

IF: You had to improvise a little bit early on. Were you ready for that?
KC: “I got pressure so I had to roll out and my receivers and I have really good chemistry to they knew to bail out when I roll, and we got a big first down to keep the momentum going on the first drive.”

IF:  What was it like, having to wait for this moment?
KC: “This is my first varsity start leading the team so I was just a little nervous but excited to come out and play. The wait has been brutal, but just the hope around everyone has been great and there’s more life in this team.”

IF: How have you seen this team deal with the situation?
KC: “I honestly think that the pandemic has brought this team closer because we’ve still be working even though we’ve been off, and everyone has formed a really tight bond, and I think this season is going to be great.”
