THE DETAILS:
Long Beach Poly vs. Corona Centennial
CIF-Southern Section – Week 4
At Corona (Calif.) Centennial High School
Kickoff: 7 p.m. PT on Friday, Sept. 17
LONG BEACH POLY (1-2 overall, 0-0 Moore League) is coming off its first victory of the season – a 35-21 win over Leuzinger – meaning the Jackrabbits are likely carrying more optimism into this week than they probably should. Similar to Centennial this season in that its offense splits QB duties between two talented players, Poly can score plenty of points but it won’t be enough to keep up with the Huskies’ high-tempo attack.
HEAD COACH: Stephen Barbee
ROSTER – QB: #5-Shea Kuykendall, Sr. (6-foot-2, 205 pounds); QB: #1-Darius Curry, Soph. (6-foot, 181); RB: #6-Devin Samples, Jr. (5-6, 160); WR: #18-Mekyle Jackson, Sr. (6-3, 181); WR: #4-Jason Robinson, Soph. (5-10, 170); OL: #75-Wendell Moe, Sr. (6-3, 320); DE: #51-Donovan Yandall, Sr. (6-2, 230); OLB: #25-Ikenasio Mikaele, Jr. (6-1, 220); CB: #2-Donovan Turner, Sr. (6-1, 185); K: #19-Dylan Michel, Jr. (5-7, 160)
CORONA CENTENNIAL (3-0 overall, 0-0 Big VIII League) is quietly out for revenge against Norco every time it steps on the field. The Huskies defense hasn’t allowed a point in more than 72 minutes of play, and the offense is now moving fluidly between two and even three QBs. Is this the fourth-best team in California as currently ranked on MaxPreps.com? This game will be entertaining but isn’t likely to answer many questions.
HEAD COACH: Matt Logan
ROSTER – QB: #1-Izzy Carter, Sr. (6-foot-2, 183 pounds); QB: #17-Carson Conklin, Jr. (5-11, 185); RB: #5-Jayson Cortes, Jr., (5-8, 190); WR: #13-Eric Denham, Jr. (6-foot, 170); OL: #56-AJ Viapulu, Sr. (6-2, 250); DL: #99-Gavriel Lightfoot, Sr. (6-3, 295); MLB: #44-Ethan Wenzel, Sr. (6-2, 220); CB: #8-Jaden Mickey, Sr. (5-11, 155); K: #82-Ayden Angeles, Sr. (5-11, 170)
THE DIFFERENCE:
Centennial’s defensive backfield is among the best in the nation with a whole bunch of legit three- and four-star guys locking down the edges and covering everything deep. It’ll will take an extremely disciplined offensive game plan, executed to perfection, for any team to have success against the Huskies over four quarters.
THE FINAL SCORE (PROJECTED):
Corona Centennial 54, Long Beach Poly 17
