Make It Reign!

The Reign has begun in the Inland Empire!

The Ontario Reign began playing hockey Saturday night at new Citizen’s Business Bank Arena. What a game it must have been! I didn’t go, but it looked like it was one helluva an opening. Local sportswriter J.P. Hoornstra has the full scoop but I’ll summarize for you…

The Reign were down two goals heading into the third period but were able to tie the game and force overtime. Neither team scored in the extra period and per league rules, the game was decided by shootout.

Some local kid from Upland then netted an amazing game-winner and the crowd went wild. Wish I could’ve been there. I like hockey, especially when I can see it up close. It’s so intense and FAST! It may be the best sport, in terms of action, to attend live.

The Reign play in the ECHL, one of several Double-A hockey leagues in North America with teams in places like Boise, Bakersfield, Dayton and Biloxi. The Reign are an affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, so chances are good that when the Kings sign a talented draft pick, he’ll play here. We might also see some of the Kings regulars play here as they rehab from injury.

But hockey isn’t the only thing going on at the new arena. The Lakers will play an exhibition game there, and there’ll be concerts and junk.

And as a resident of the Inland Empire for more than two decades, it is about time there was a real ARENA around here! The closest thing to one until now has been Coussoulis Arena on the campus of Cal State San Bernardino. Hardly a professional stage, Coussoulis struggles to host college basketball tournaments and random pro wrestling events. But not this new place!

Citizen’s Business Bank Arena, or ‘Zen Arena (as I’m trademarking) is like having the Honda Center come east. And with tickets starting only at $10, a playa like you or me can afford to “Make it Reign!”
