RCC Wins Holiday Tournament

For the Tigers of Riverside, the championship game of the 40th Annual Riverside Community College District Wells Fargo Men’s Basketball Holiday Tournament was analagous to the New York Yankees for a number of reasons.

No. 1: It was the last Holiday Tournament game in the old Wheelock Gymnasium. The gym is set to be retrofitted over the next calendar year and there will not be another Holiday Tournament until 2011.

ANALOGY: The New York Yankees playing Game 7 of the World Series in the final season at old Yankee Stadium.

No. 2: The team was forced to play without star point guard Danny Redmon. Redmon (6-foot-2, 180 pounds), who recently committed to Northern Arizona University, severely injured his ankle in the tournament semifinal and will be out an indefinite period of time.

ANALOGY: The Yankees playing in that World Series without an injured Derek Jeter.

No. 3: Willie Trimble had to prove, at some point, that he can dominate the guard position at the junior college level. What better opportunity than when you’re forced to make plays in order to win a tournament? It was a pressure situation and Trimble proved his mettle. He even earned tourney MVP honors.

ANALOGY: Yankees 2B Robinson Cano moving over to shortstop in place of Jeter and hitting the game-winning home run in that World Series Game 7.

It is true that the Yankees’ side of this never happened. The analogies are completely fictional. The Yankees didn’t win the World Series in its last season at old Yankee Stadium; Derek Jeter has never been injured and Robinson Cano probably would not move to shortstop. Obviously, it would be Alex Rodriguez. I digress.

But those things are really happening for RCC. Wheelock Gym is being updated; Danny Redmon really is hurt and Willie Trimble really did have a huge game when his team needed it the most.

So maybe RCC’s Tigers aren’t the New York Yankees. After all, none of RCC’s Tigers are being paid.

They do have one thing in common — they are both reigning champions. The Yankees are winners of the ’09 World Series (their first season in new Yankee Stadium), while the Tigers also won championship bling this past year. RCC defeated Orange Empire Conference rival Saddleback College to win the California Community College Athletic Association title in March ’09.
