Prep Preview: Alta Loma at Ramona

I’m covering the Rancho Cucamonga Alta Loma-Riverside Ramona boys varsity CIF-Southern Section Division 3 wildcard round playoff game today, Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2016.

The best part of this assignment is its only four miles — and just three turns by automobile — away.

AltaLomaLOGOTHE LOW DOWN:
Rancho Cucamonga Alta Loma (13-9-2 overall, 5-4-1 Mt. Baldy) almost had climbed the mountain but was again felled by Ontario Chaffey and Ontario High in its quest for a league title. The Braves were 0-4-1 vs. Chaffey and Ontario this year and struggled against ranked teams overall, winning just one game in eight tries vs. teams that fell inside the Inland Area Prep Soccer Top 10 at some point this season. They’re currently backing into the playoffs after losing four of their last six games — including their last two — with just five wins in 10 games this calendar year.

RamonaLOGORiverside Ramona (10-8-2 overall, 7-2-1 River Valley) hosts a playoff game for the first time in a long, long time after winning 6 of 7 games down the stretch to claim the No. 3 spot in the RVL. This is just the third playoff appearance by the Rams since 2008, and the first under Coach Mike Tongg. Senior Edward Perez had 15 goals in his first 11 games, and junior goalkeeper Alejandro Romo has 110 saves this year.

PROBABLE STARTING XIs:
Alta Loma
— Unavailable.

Ramona — GK Alejandro Romo (Jr.); D Miguel Hinojosa (Sr.); D Luis Calderon (Sr.) D Miguel Jimenez (Sr.); Ismael Mendoza (Sr.); MF Miguel Hernandez (Sr.); MF Adrian Gutierrez (Sr.); MF Cody Calhoun (Sr.); F Cuatemox Villada (Soph.); F Edward Perez (Sr.).

THE DIFFERENCE:
Alta Loma’s level. The Braves are sure to outpace their opponents today.

THE FINAL SCORE:
Alta Loma 4, Ramona 1
