Prep Impressions: Feb. 18, 2011

I covered the Apple Valley Granite Hills-Lake Elsinore Lakeside CIF-Southern Section Division 5 first-round boys varsity soccer match for The Press-Enterprise on Friday, Feb. 18, 2011, and came away thinking I was glad I was able to get a seat in the press booth.

Sure, the match was nice — there were five goals — but I’m more pleased I was able to watch from someplace nice and dry. SoCal was drenched again on Friday, and there’s little fun in watching soccer while standing in a torrential downpour.

The match got interesting early, when Granite Hills’ Humberto Penaloza scored in the first minute to give his team the earliest of leads. Penaloza deftly put away a rebound, and injected a shot of adrenaline into the match.

It wasn’t the Cougars, though, that took advantage. It was Lakeside, senses infused, pressing forward. Then forward. Then forward. Then forward.

Goals starting pouring in and the match was completely lopsided by halftime. Ivan Reyes, Nestor Bravo, Ramiro Ruiz and Mauricio Perez all scored foals for the Lancers.

Momentum turns so dramatic are rare in high school soccer.
