Prep Preview: Poly at Centennial

I’m shooting pitch-by-pitch video of today’s Riverside Poly-Corona Centennial varsity baseball game for The Press-Enterprise. The best part of this assignment is sure to be observing former MLB standouts Troy Percival and Greg Myers coaching in the Bears’ dugout.

THE LOWDOWN:
Riverside Poly (5-0), No. 3 in this week’s Inland Area Prep Baseball Top 10, rallied in the ninth to defeat Rancho Cucamonga Etiwanda in the championship game of the Chino Tournament on Saturday. Leon Baham is his third season as head coach of the Bears.

Corona Centennial (6-1), No. 2 in this week’s Top 10, swept a non-league doubleheader with Ventura St. Bonaventure on Tuesday, and have won five consecutive games. Tim Kleveno is in his fourth season as head coach of the Huskies.

THE STARTING 9s:
Riverside Poly
 — P: Taylor Rappaport; C: R.J. Ybarra; 1B: Lou Johnson; 2B: Ian Peltz; 3B: Daniel Berg; SS: Chris Rabago; OF: Danny Chiodini, Jacob Webb, Matt Ybarra.

Corona Centennial — P: Matthew Taylor; C: Robert Cummins; 1B: William Ouellete; 2B: Chandler Montalvo; 3B: Michael Gomez; SS: Devon Ralston; OF: Daniel Arrellano, Dylan Sloan, Jake Weston.

THE DIFFERENCE:
This game will set the tone and tempo in the race for the Big VIII League title. Riverside Poly seems to have a deeper team but lacks a signature victory. Corona Centennial is talented but inconsistent. Home field advantage may be enough to settle the Huskies’ nerves and ignite their bats.
