Prep Preview: San Andreas League

The San Andreas League is one of the oldest leagues in the Inland Area, so the competition may seem a little stale.

It also had two of its best teams — San Bernardino Cajon and Colton — stripped from its ranks, shortening the SAL from an eight-team league to just a six-team deal. The league also has dropped from the Central to the Eastern Division.

Rialto Carter (11-2) catapulted to the top of the class last season behind a prolific runner and a stout defense. After an inspired run, the Knights advanced to the Semifinal Round of the CIF-Southern Section Central Division playoffs. But the runner (Gaylon Maxie) graduated. The defense? Its coordinator took an open head coaching job inside the district.

Was it a one-and-done scenario for Carter? Or can Alex Pearce’s team continue to progress?

Carter plays Rialto Eisenhower in a Week 4 non-league game. Ike’s coach, Vinny Fazio, was Carter’s DC the last two seasons.

Rialto (7-4) made the playoffs but were shutout by Central Division finalist Palm Springs in the 1st Round. The Knights will play both of last year’s Eastern Division finalists, Fontana Summit and Menifee Heritage, in non-league games in Week’s 4 and 5, respectfully.

The four San Bernardino schools, led by San Bernardino San Gorgonio (6-6), were a combined 9-33 last season. Just not a whole lot there.
