Prep Preview: Great Oak at Heritage

I’m covering the Temecula Great Oak-Menifee Heritage varsity football game tonight for The Press-Enterprise and HSGametime.pe.com. The best part of this assignment will be getting an early look at getting to “a game that will mark a season,” according to Press-Enterprise sports editor David Zink.

THE LOW DOWN:
This is the first-ever meeting between the two programs, both of which are loaded with talent on the offensive side of the ball.

Great Oak (2-1 overall) lost to Moreno Valley Rancho Verde by four points (28-24) last week but comes into tonight’s game averaging more than 37 points per game. Hopes are high that the QB-RB duo of Carson Luna and Jakob Certeza can lead the Wolfpack to the playoffs for the first time since 2009. Fourth-year coach Robbie Robinson will rely on his big guys up front — Nick Ponzio, Justin Barlow and Matt Hobby — to push the line of scrimmage, and not back down against an explosive Heritage defense that is led by two future Division I players.

Heritage (3-0 overall) is ranked and looking for its first victory over an Inland Division team. It has two players — WR/CB Darius Allensworth and RB/DB Jamal Morrow — worth the price of admission. They have experience. They’re outscoring teams by more than three TDs, on average, and putting games teams away with style. It really is lining up for the Patriots, and if they can defeat an Inland Division team, Coach Kraig Broach could have an argument for a State Bowl appearance should the team win its remaining games.

KEY PLAYERS:
Great Oak
 — QB: Carson Luna, Sr. (6-foot-1, 200 pounds); RB/LB: Jakob Certeza, Sr. (6-1, 225); C.McIntosh, B. Presley, WR: Andrew Molinar, Jr. (5-7, 170); DB: Christian Smith, Sr. (6-foot, 185);, WR/DB Garrett Ackerman, Sr. 96-foot, 190); OL/DL: Nick Ponzio, Sr. (6-1, 285); Justin Barlow, Sr. (6-3, 245); Matt Hobby, Jr. (6-2, 235).

Heritage — QB: Matt Bradshaw, Sr. (6-foot-1, 155 pounds); RB/DB: Jamal Morrow, Sr. (5-10, 180); RB/DB: Limihai Hifo, Jr. (5-10, 205); WR/DB: Darius Allensworth (5-11, 175); RB/LB Sione Takitaki, Jr. 96-3, 240); WR/LB: Marvin Hifo, Sr. (5-10, 190); OL/LB: Nick Avne, Sr. (5-9, 215); OL/DL: Kyle McBride, Sr. (6-4, 270). K: Logan Netter, Sr. (5-9, 155).

THE DIFFERENCE:
It’s going to take everything Heritage has to defeat Great Oak, and the best will come out of Morrow and Allensworth. The Patriots’ dynamic duo will combine to score at least three times in a narrow victory that could come down to a big field-goal attempt.
THE FINAL SCORE: Heritage 38, Great Oak 35
