Prep Preview: Riverside Kiwanis Tournament

I’m covering the Riverside Kiwanis boys basketball tournament tonight at Riverside Poly HS for The Press-Enterprise and The best part of this assignment will be covering two games, the first of which is a bitter intra-city rivalry.

This week’s tournament marks the umpteenth rendition of the Kiwanis Tournament in Riverside. Co-hosted at Poly, Arlington and Ramona High Schools, the tournament features 10 teams teams and will conclude with Saturday night’s championship game at Poly.

Tonight’s games at Poly — te ones which I’m covering — are Arlington at Poly at 5:30 p.m. and Redlands vs. San Bernardino Arroyo Valley at 7 p.m.

The first of the two — Arlington (4-2) vs. Poly (3-3) — figures to desolve into something of a fist fight for early-season city bragging rights. Bears coach Mark Vanta has some playoff experience — and a couple of swing men — to lean upon. The Lions are off to a strong start but are yet to show sustained growth to go along with all those senior players.

— PG: Preston Tucker, Sr. (5-9, 160); G: Vince Cason, Sr. (5-9 165); G: Joshua Godwin, Jr. (5-10, 170); F: Kenshael “Spencer” Arrington, Jr. (6-3, 175); C: Patrick Jackson, Sr. (6-4, 255)

Poly — PG: Bailee Freidman, Sr. (5-foot-9, 160 pounds); G: Matt Slater, Jr. (5-10, 140); G: J.D. Builteman, Soph. (6-1, 170); W: Kyle Benter, Jr. (6-foot, 155); F/C: Chris Ginwright, Sr. (6-3, 170)

Both team play similar drive-and-kick styles on offense so the game will come down to which ever team can get stops and make jumpers.
THE FINAL SCORE: Poly 63, Arlington 59
