Take a closer look at Riverside Poly senior RB David Samuelu and you’ll see more than just actor-good looks, but a player with the drive to find the seam an take the football to the end zone.

Surprisingly, Samuelu leads the Bears in rushing yards this season (187), and had 87 yards and two touchdowns as Poly defeated Riverside Ramona 45-14 on Friday, Sept. 6, 2013.

He’s even getting more carries than junior RB Devontre Hale, who had a tremendous ’12 season and looked to be the guy in ’13.

I caught up with Samuelu outside Ramona’s stadium as he prepared to board the team bus.

How are the Bears different this season?

“I’m really positive. I have faith in my team, especially me and Devontre in the back(field),” Samuelu said. “But it’s not just about us two, it’s about the whole team. We gotta work hard. It’s all desire. You gotta want it.”

How did losing to Perris Citrus Hill in Week 0 affect the mindset of the team?

“I think the hype was different from Week 0. We got hyped. After that loss we wanted to come in and execute,” he said. “(Ramona) wasn’t ready for us. Their body language, you could see that they were weak. They didn’t want none from us, cause Poly football, we go hard.”

Anything about this game sticking with you?

“The dirtiness. We gotta learn from that. We can’t get mad or angry about that stuff,” he said.

You heard the handsome bear. Not the face.
