Prep Preview: King at La Sierra

I’m covering the Riverside King-Riverside La Sierra varsity football game tonight, Sept. 13, 2013, for The Press-Enterprise and HSGametime.com.

The best part of this assignment will be getting my first look at both the Wolves and Eagles, two teams in very different places right now.

kingLOGO2THE LOW DOWN:
The Wolves (1-0 overall) opened the season with a 38-18 victory over Riverside Norte Vista in Week 1, but didn’t feel great about it after letting a 24-0 lead fizzle in the second half. Coach Kevin Corridan didn’t seem enthused, saying “There’s a lot of things we have to iron out,” despite QB Jacob Rogers passing for three TDs, and RB Juwan Washington rushing for two TDs in the win.

The Eagles (0-1) were up 9-0 vs. MoVal Canyon Springs in Week 1 and were unable to hold on to their lead as they allowed 19 unanswered points in a disastrous first game for new coach Jeff Roney. The loss will be blamed on a series of officiating miscues — including an inadvertent whistle that killed a blocked field-goal return — but it’s an auspicious start for the new regime.

King
— QB: Jacob Rogers (Jr., 6-2, 170); RB: Juwan Washington (Jr., 5-9, 160); WR: Terrelle Smith (Jr., 5-10, 180); WR/DB: T.J. Noland (Jr., 5-11, 160); LB: Ray Basurto (Sr., 6-1, 210); OL: Sean Krepsz (Sr., 6-5, 295); DB: David Reynolds (Sr., 5-11, 185).

La Sierra — QB: Derrick Cruz (Jr., 5-10, 175); RB: Jonathan McCoy (Sr., 5-9, 180); TE/LB: Steven Hak (Sr., 5-11, 195); Jordan McCoy (Jr., 5-11, 195); OL/LB: Randy Hoffman (Jr., 5-10, 210); WR/DB: Windell Thompson (Jr., 6-1, 175); DB: Nathan Bates (Sr., 6-2, 175).

THE DIFFERENCE:
There’s little doubt — King is getting better. The Wolves could challenge for the last playoff spot out of the Big VIII. Over at La Sierra, Eagles’ fans are very much in wait-and-see mode. Could there be a pivotal moment in this game for either team?
THE FINAL SCORE:
King 27, La Sierra 21
