Prep Preview: Kaiser at Poly

I’m covering the Fontana Kaiser-Riverside Poly varsity football game on Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013 for The Press-Enterprise and HSGametime.com.

The best part of this assignment is that both teams are ranked in the latest CIF-Southern Section Central Division poll, and the game is being played at Riverside’s Ramona High — conveniently located three miles from home.

THE LOW DOWN:
KaiserThe Cats (1-1) lost 21-15 to San Bernardino Cajon in Week 2 and fell out of the Inland Area Prep Football Top 10. Nobody saw that coming. Except may be Phil Zelaya.

Everything went wrong on Friday night vs. Cajon. Kaiser, winner of last year’s Central Division title, didn’t lead at any point after costly penalties put them in an early hole, and the offense sputtered vs. Cajon, one of the Citrus Belt League’s lesser teams (REV, Eisenhower, et al) and one picked by many to miss the playoffs.

The Bears (2-1) have now won two consecutive games and are hopeful their newfound offensive balance can continue making strides. It’ll be a tough task vs. Kaiser’s mean green swarming defense.

RB David Samuelu had 182 yards and one TD on 14 carries, and QB Chandler Drachslin tossed three TDs as Poly beat up on Rubidoux 42-19 . As a result, the Bears made their first appearance in the CIF-SS Central Division Poll this week.

THE KEY PLAYERS:
Kaiser
 — QB: Raymond Padilla (Jr., 5-10, 175); TE: David Miller (Sr., 6-1, 210); OL: Jonathan Guzman (Sr., 6-3, 285); Weslee Lewis (Sr., 5-10, 143); RB/DB: Clayton Howard (Sr., 6-foot, 170).

PolyLOGOPoly — QB: Chandler Drachslin (Jr., 6-2, 170). RBs: Devontre Hale (Jr., 5-10, 180), David Samuelu (Sr., 5-11, 190). WR/DB: Ykili Ross (Jr., 6-1, 185); LaMet Fowler (Jr., 5-10, 160): Anthony Banks (Sr., 5-11, 186); LB/TE: Chris Navigato (Sr., 5-11, 205); LB: Leighton Silva (Sr., 5-8, 200); DL: Benjamin Tualenga (Jr., 6-0, 2-5); Koron Lowe (Jr., 5-9, 200).

THE DIFFERENCE:
Kaiser’s defensive scheming and athleticism will grind up Poly RBs Devontre Hale and David Samuelu and eventually get to QB Chandler Drachslin, as it has so many times before. Coach Phil Zelaya should have this team in a frenzy.
THE FINAL SCORE: Kaiser 19, Poly 14
