Prep Preview: Ramona at King

I’m covering the Riverside King-Riverside Ramona varsity football game on Friday, Oct. 5, 2013, for The Press-Enterprise and HSGametime.com.

The best part of this assignment is the probability that King will improve to 5-0 for the first time in the school’s history.

ramonaHSTHE LOW DOWN:
Ramona (2-2 overall) survived a trip out to the desert, coming away with a 54-53 overtime victory over Indio Shadow Hills in a Week 4 non-league game. QB Damon Mayes set season highs in attempts (28) and touchdown passes (3) to lead the way. The Rams have allowed 115 points in its last two games, and are facing their only Inland Division opponent this season.

King (4-0 overall) came from behind to defeat Perris Citrus Hill in the Battle of Wood Road, with QB Jacob Rogers throwing the most important touchdown of his career to lead the Wolves to a dramatic 24-7 victory. Rogers was 12 of 24 for 222 yards and two TDs overall as the King beat Citrus Hill for the first time after losing 40-49-10 last year.

kingHSTHE KEY PLAYERS:
Ramona — QB: Damon Mayes (Sr., 6-4, 215); RB: Chantrail Lathon (Jr. 5-10, 192); WR/P: Lorenzo Cabrera (Sr., 6-2, 170); RB/LB: Brandon Lefevre (Sr., 5-10, 221); DE/T: Hosea Huff (Sr., 6-3, 220); WR/CB: Henry Batista (Sr., 5-9, 145); NG: Art Cabrera (Sr., 6-3, 345).

King QB: Jacob Rogers (Jr., 6-2, 170); RB: Juwan Washington (Jr., 5-9, 160); WR: Terrelle Smith (Jr., 5-10, 180); WR/DB: T.J. Noland (Jr., 5-11, 160); LB: Ray Basurto (Sr., 6-1, 210); OL: Sean Krepsz (Sr., 6-5, 295); DB: David Reynolds (Sr., 5-11, 185).

THE DIFFERENCE:
King’s level of talent. Which isn’t something that gets written or said very much but it’s true in this game. The Wolves have too much depth for Ramona to stay in the game more than two quarters.
THE FINAL SCORE: King 31, Ramona 17
