Prep Preview: Patriot at Valley View
I’m covering the Jurupa Valley Patriot-Moreno Valley Valley View varsity football game tonight, Friday, Sept. 12, 2014, for The Press-Enterprise. The best part of this assignment is that one team will reverse its fortunes — if only for a night.
THE LOW DOWN:
The Warriors (0-1) were slow to get going in their opener and it was a case of too-little-too-late in a 27-21 loss to Ontario Chaffey. New coach Chris Fowler may has a dual-threat QB in Brandon Pacheco, who totaled more than 230 yards and two TDs last week, but needs help in other spots.
The Eagles (0-2 overall) are off to a sluggish start under 1st-year coach Dan Lyons, and have just 108 rushing yards through their first two games. Sophomore QB Kaleb Hayes is completing just 45-percent of his passes and has just one TD against two INTs thus far. It’s not pretty.
THE KEY PLAYERS:
Patriot — QB/SS Brandon Pacheco (Sr., 5-foot-9, 170 pounds); T/DT Daniel Rodriguez (Sr., 5-10, 245); WR/CB Joseph Meurer (Sr., 5-11, 165); RB/OLB Miguel Alvarez (Jr., 5-7, 160); MLB/RB Eric Equihua (Jr., 5-6, 190); WR/DB Jacob Arguello (Sr., 5-9, 145).
Valley View — QB Kaleb Hayes (Soph., 6-foot, 155); RB/DB Kyler Mercer, Sr., 5-6, 160); OL/DL Kenneth Bauder (Sr., 6-foot, 265); WR/SS Ramean Duckett (Jr., 5-6, 160); RB/LB Tyson Radford (Sr., 5-7, 165)
THE DIFFERENCE:
Not much. The Warriors have more on their roster than Valley View but it’s hard to measure the Eagles’ level of motivation after two rather upsetting losses.
THE FINAL SCORE: Patriot 21, Valley View 18
