Prep Preview: Northview at La Sierra

I’m covering the Covina Northview-Riverside La Sierra varsity football game for The Press-Enterprise.

The best part of the assignment will be rapping with my former U.S. history teacher at La Sierra, Joel Whelchel, who (I think) still works the mic during games alongside long-time on-air partner Will Jacobsmeyer, at Eagles games.

The Vikings (4-0 overall) have beat up on teams east of the 57 Freeway — against teams who’ve probably never hear of — so the fact that they’ve allowed just six points in each of their last three games shouldn’t exactly be a big red flag. RB Andres Hooper carries the load while Elijah Grijalva can hit the home run.

The Eagles (1-3 overall) are coming off a come-from-ahead loss against Corona in Week 3. Derrick Cruz and Co. led … and halftime but scored just twice after halftime in a … loss. Cruz is definitely one of the River Valley League’s best offensive players but needs others around him to step up alongside.

— QB Steven Comstock (Jr., 5-foot-11, 160 pounds); RB/LB Andres Grijalva (Jr., 5-10, 185); RB Andrew Hooper (Jr., 6-foot, 180); WR/CB Paul Cooper (Jr., 6-foot, 180); WR/SS Alex Camacho (Sr., 6-foot, 180); DE/LB Jaron Reed (Sr., 6-1, 230); DE Michael Gutierrez (Sr., 6-3, 275).

La Sierra — QB Derrick Cruz (Jr., 5-foot-9, 170 pounds); RB/LB Jordan McCoy (Sr., 5-11, 200); OL/LB Randy Hoffman (Sr., 5-11, 220); RB Kai Williams (Sr., 5-6, 160); WR Andreau Benny (Jr., 6-foot, 190); WR/DB Christian Zamarripa (Sr., 6-foot, 160); WR/DB Windell Thompson (Sr., 6-2, 186).

Northview pounds the ball, controls the clock and attempts to grind teams to a pulp. Cruz and the Eagles may be far more dynamic but they also are inconsistent and mistake prone.
THE FINAL SCORE: La Sierra 23, Northview 21
