Prep Preview: Grand Terrace vs. Arlington

I’m covering the Grand Terrace-Riverside Arlington varsity football game tonight, Oct., 3, 2014, for The Press-Enterprise and pe.com.

The best part of this assignment is not that Arlington is my wife’s alma mater (and the alma mater of some of my oldest and closest friends) but that the game is being played at Ramona High. This means I save on gas.

grandterraceLOGOTHE LOW DOWN:
The Titans (1-3 overall) got close last week in a 16-12 loss to Rancho Cucamonga Etiwanda, but their only win remains a 35-14 victory over Ontario Chaffey in Week 2. Whatever happens this week, new Coach Ryan Smalls’ defense will probably give up fewer than the 27.5 points per game it’s allowed thus far.

The Lions (0-4 overall) have stumbled out of the cage and show little signs of staggering to their feet. Coach Pat McCarthy, now in his 20th season at Arlington, has a few offensive weapons in junior QB Isaiah Morgan, RB Asante Coleman and WR Robert Awunganyi but the team lacks experience and/or a defense.

ArlingtonLOGOTHE KEY PLAYERS:
Grand Terrace — LB/TE Tyler Valentine (Jr., 6-foot-1, 190 pounds); DL Rashad Cozart (Sr., 6-2, 225); OL Brandyn Alvarez (Jr., 6-2, 275); RB/CB Tony Salter (Sr., 5-11, 165); DB/RB Chris Santicoy (Sr., 5-9, 170).

Arlington — QB Isaiah Morgan (Jr., 6-foot-1, 185 pounds); RB/DB Asante Coleman (Jr., 6-foot, 175); DL James Bonner (Sr., 6-3, 280); WR/FS Remmy Nerio (Sr., 6-2, 180); WR/DB Robert Awunganyi (Jr., 6-foot, 160); WR/S Raul Larios (Sr., 5-10, 160).

THE DIFFERENCE:
Very little, really. Both teams are struggling to find victories and both lack enough talent to make it stick. This game will likely come down to field position and turnovers.
FINAL SCORE: Arlington 23, Grand Terrace 21
