Prep Preview: Rancho Verde at North

I’m covering the Moreno Valley Rancho Verde-Riverside North varsity football game tonight, Friday, Oct. 31, 2014, for The Press-Enterprise and PE.com.

The best part of this assignment is that it could rain. Isn’t that something. I’ll get to break out my heavy coat.

RanchoVerdeTHE LOW DOWN:
The Mustangs (6-2 overall, 2-1 Inland Valley) were upended by Riverside Poly in Week 8, allowing 28 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to all but secede the IVL title for the first time. Expect a bounce-back performance out of QB Sheriron Jones, who threw two interceptions — including one that was returned for a TD with less than one minute remaining — in the loss.

The Huskies (3-5 overall, 3-0 Inland Valley) are on the verge of a playoff berth, which they could secure with a victory tonight. Coach John Rice’s defense has phenomenal since the start of league play, holding teams to six points or less twice in the last three games. Strong play from linebackers Jerrod Bartley, David Martinez and Daryl French has been a cornerstone.

THE DIFFERENCE:
Rancho Verde’s massive offensive line. Tevita Halalilo and Co. should dominate the line of scrimmage and Jamal Scott should have a good night even if his QB is shaking off a little late-season funk.
THE FINAL SCORE: Rancho Verde 48, North 24
