Prep Preview: Vista Murrieta at Upland
I’m covering the Vista Murrieta-Upland CIF-Southern Section West Valley Division semifinal round varsity football game tonight, Friday, Nov. 28, 2014, for The Press-Enterprise and PE.com.
The best part of this assignment is getting a look at two teams I have not seen since last season.
Game time is 7:30 p.m. at Upland High School.
THE LOW DOWN:
The Broncos (10-2 overall) came from behind to defeat Rancho Santa Margarita Tesoro 28-27 last week, with the defense allowing just a field goal after halftime. QB Kyle Williams continues to be hampered by a sore ankle, but the running game has continued to produce.
The Scots (10-2 overall) were on fire last week, going to College of the Canyons and all but destroying Newhall Hart and their nationally-rated QB Brady White. The ‘U’ intercepted White five times in the first three quarters last week, with a five different players getting picks.
THE KEY PLAYERS:
Vista Murrieta — QB Kyle Williams (Sr., 6-foot, 180 pounds); RB Tito Feliciano (Sr., 5-7, 170); RB-LB Seth Acda (5-8, 180); RB-DB Keith Ford (Jr., 5-9, 180); WR Colin Baker (Sr., 6-2, 185); TE Jamie Nunley (Sr., 6-5, 215); DB Brandon Worthy (Sr., 5-11, 178); Dl R.J. Robiskie (Sr., 6-1, 220); K Austin Richardson (Sr., 6-1, 205).
Upland — QB Tyler Hilinski (Sr., 6-foot-3, 191 pounds); RB-LB Josh Woods (Sr., 6-3, 210); RB-LB Nathan Tilford (Soph., 6-1, 185); DB Cameron Powell (Sr., 6-foot, 180); OL Donnie Greene (Sr., 6-4, 282); DL-TE Vincent Elefante (Sr., 6-5, 225); TE Hasani Smith (Sr., 6-6, 240); K Luke Van Ginkel (Sr., 5-10, 205).
THE DIFFERENCE:
The level of quarterbacking. Williams has done an admirable job in a pinch this season, but Hilinski is the real deal.
THE FINAL SCORE: Upland 38, Vista Murrieta 31
