Prep Preview: Los Osos vs. Claremont

I’m covering the Rancho Cucamonga Los Osos-Claremont varsity boys soccer match today. First kick is set for 3 p.m. PT at San Bernardino San Gorgonio High School stadium.

The best part of this assignment is it’s the final of the San G. Shootout.

LosOsosLOGOTHE LOW DOWN:
Los Osos (3-3-5 overall) advanced out of its group despite a 2-1 loss to Ontario Colony on Saturday, and got wins in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds yesterday to move on to its third San G. Shootout final in three seasons. The Grizzlies posted two regulation ties before falling out of the last week’s Riverside Poly HS Tom Tilson Holiday Classic with a 3-1 loss to Palm Desert in a consolation bracket quarterfinal. Coach Gerard Solorzano had some players leave for the holiday break, so he may be playing a lineup not necessarily at full strength.

ClaremontLOGOClaremont (7-3-1) advanced to the championship game with wins over Fontana Miller, Hesperia Oak Hills and San Bernardino Cajon. It’s the second title-game appearance for the Wolfpack this season, who lost to Redlands East Valley, 1-0, in the Tournament of Champions final back on Dec. 12. Coach Fred Bruce-Oliver’s young-ish side is 2-3 vs. ranked teams this season after dropping a 1-0 result to Rancho Cucamonga Alta Loma last week. Goals seem to be at premium, having tallied two-or-more just twice this season.

THE KEY PLAYERS:
Los Osos
— GK Jafet Chaves (Sr.); D Benjamin Riegsecker (Sr.); D Max Kihm (Sr.); D Juan Munoz (Sr.); D Luke Mason (Jr.); MF Giovanni Bernabe (Jr.); MF Fernando Diego (Fr.); MF Kevin Page (Jr.); MF Khalil Zeyad (Sr.); F Jaime Gutierrez (Soph.); F Giovanni Perez (Jr.)

THE DIFFERENCE:
Truly a game that could go either way. Both coaches have loads of experience, but Claremont may be a little more organized at this point of the season.

THE FINAL SCORE:
Claremont 2, Rancho Cucamonga Los Osos 1
