Prep Preview: Rim of the World at Norte Vista

I’m covering the Lake Arrowhead Rim of the World-Riverside Norte Vista varsity football game tonight, Friday, Sept. 4, 2015, for The Press Enterprise, HSGametime.pe.com & @pecom_preps.

The best part of this assignment is getting to watch Freddie Holly’s season debut.

RimLOGOTHE LOW DOWN:
The Scots (0-0 overall) are banking on QB Jimmy Schroeder to lead after missing last season. Schroeder, a 6-foot-5 junior, was injured in the team’s 2014 preseason scrimmage, so he’s still looking to make his first varsity start. WR/CB Raul Victorino can be a difference-maker on both sides, and head coach Ernie Madrigal has a few of all-league returners on defense (Richard Roseman, Zach McHenry) but there remains big-time depth issues on the mountain.

nortevistaLOGOThe Braves (0-0 overall) have their eyes on the big prize this season. Coach Ken Batdorf may be back to a day-to-day approach but ask any player and they’ll tell you ’15 is all about winning a CIF-Southern Section Eastern Division title. Senior RB Fred Holly, Jr. may be the Inland Area’s most powerful running back. His current nickname, ‘3kay,’ is an acronym for his quest to rush for 3,000-plus yards this season. This game will also mean the debuts for the team’s three marquee incoming transfers — Xavier Hughes, Solomon Iosefa and Stanton Manumaleuna. Hughes left Rubidoux while Iosefa and Manumaleuna, aka ‘The Samoan Twins,’ were both intra-district transfers from Riverside La Sierra.
