Prep Preview: Vista del Lago at Rubidoux

I’m covering the MoVal Vista del Lago-Rubidoux varsity football game tonight, Friday, Oct. 16, 2015, for The Press-Enterprise, HSGametime.pe.com & @PEcom_preps.

The best part of this assignment is getting my first look at a reloaded Rubidoux side in a battle for first place in the Mountain Valley League.

VdLLOGOTHE LOW DOWN:
The Ravens (5-1 overall, 1-0 Mountain Valley) has put together a 16-3 record since the start of last season, and seem to have every intent to place their stamp upon their new league. They’ve scored 30 or more points in each of their last five games, and are coming off a 50-0 victory over San Bernardino Pacific in their MVL opener. Senior QB Mykal Riley is spreading the ball around nicely but has average more than one INT per game so far, and senior RB John Lacey Jr. has received the bulk of the carries.

rubidoux2LOGOThe Falcons (6-0 overall, 1-0 Mountain Valley) have scored 42 points each of the last two weeks in earning victories over two of their oldest rivals — Riverside Poly and San Bernardino High — and are off to their first 6-0 start this century. It’s been quite a turnaround under new head coach Patrick Thompson, who took over following the offseason resignation of Jason McMains. This team runs the football, unapologetic for their smash-mouth style, and senior CB/RB/KR Roosevelt Carroll is a game-breaker.

THE KEY PLAYERS:
Vista del Lago
— QB Mykal Riley (Sr., 6-foot-2, 181 pounds); RB John Lacey Jr. (Sr., 5-8, 225); ATH Eric Rouse (Sr., 6-3, 195); ATH Lequion Ulrich (Jr., 5-10, 170); RB/DB Tyon Crook (Jr., 5-8, 165); SS/SB Reece Fontana (Sr., 5-10, 176); OLB Randy Calhoun (Sr., 6-2, 185); LB/RB Teron Collins (Sr., 5-8, 205); ILB/G Nicholas Clark (Sr., 6-foot, 195); DE/OL Justin Wilson (Sr., 6-4, 255); DL/OL David Palomarez (Jr., 6-2, 240); OL/DL Victor De la Trinidad (Sr., 6-2, 300).

Rubidoux — QB Ryan Parker (Sr., 5-foot-11, 165 pounds); CB/RB/KR Roosevelt Carroll (Sr., 5-7, 165); CB/RB/FS Devante Martin (Sr., 5-8, 160); TE/SS/K Jonathan Garibay (Jr., 6-2, 210); SS/FB/RB Joey Ornales (Sr., 5-10, 190); DE/TE/FB Paul Garcia (Jr., 6-foot, 220); LB/FB Brandon Carroll (Jr., 5-9, 225); DE/T/G Jasobeam Reyes (Sr., 6-2, 240); DE/T/G Christian Plascencia (5-11, 230); G/DT/C Mike Yang (Sr., 5-10, 235); G/DT Jason Flores (Sr., 5-10, 275); Juan Maldonado /Sr., 6-4, 270).

THE DIFFERENCE:
Neither team allows many points so this game will likely come down to possessions and turnovers. Expect a dominant defensive effort from Rubidoux at home.

THE FINAL SCORE:
Rubidoux 30, MoVal Vista del Lago 24
